THE REPUBLICANS SWEEP
MAUI
It was a groat day on Maui when
the result of the election became
nown and it was found that every
Republican on tins' island had
been elected by a large majority.
Many men and women waited
around the Ropublican head quar
ters until the final results were an
nounced. Waihee has always been
the Home Rule strong hold and
registration was larger thero than
ever before. In thi3 precinct Two
Hundred and Forty Ono ballots
were cast and the. Homo Rulers
boliovod thoy would, got at least
ono Hundred, and Ninety. When
tho inspectors had finished, count
ing the ballots n were ready to
begin counting the votes R. J. K,
Fow peoplo give enough thought to tho earning
capacity of a dollar. When you look at a dollar, do
not think of how much it will buy, but
HOYA MUCH IX WILL EARN.
When you find yourself thinking of your dollars
in this way, you are starting on tho only straight
and suro road to wealth. Idle dollars arc of no more
uso to the world than idlo men. Every dollar you
mako over tho cost of actual necessities should bo
immediately placed under tho safeguard of a strong
bank and kept busily at work earning other dollars

Nawahino asked tho hoard to de
cide what tho board would do in
case thoy found a ballot with two
or more votes marked for ono of
fice. Tho board declined to make
any decision before thoy found
such a ballot but stated they would
dooido each ballot on its merits
and allow all of tho watchers an
opportunity to see each and every
ballot and enter a protest against
tho counting of any ballot that
was not satisfactory to any oan
didato or watcher and noto such
protest on tho ballot. At this an
nouncement Nawahino who was a
candidate for tho Jegislaturo on tho
Homo Rule ticket created a sen
sation by denouncing the board
and grabbed tho ballot box and
with the assistanco of Thomas
Clark tho Deputy Sheriff of the
District held tho box and prevent
ed tho inspectors from proceeding
with tho count. After a timo ono
of tho inspectors succeeded in get
ting the Deputy Sheriff to recede
from his position and allow tho
count to bo made. This was somo
time after II. M. Coko had sent a
call by phono for tho county at
torney D. H. Caso and Sheriff
Saffery to como at onco which re
quest was promptly complied with
by tho officers.
For somo timo it looked lileo a
rough house in Waihco and had it
not been for tho firm stand takon
by tho two Ropublican members of
tho board they would probably
havo crrried out their bluff.
About tho timo that tho County
Attorney and tho Sheriff arrived
iV. II. Cornwell camo in and enter
ed protest after protest as ballots
that were against his interests were
rejected but made no protest at tho
rejection of ballots that wore
against tho Republicans. This
seemed odd to fair minded persons
and delayed tho counting until a
lato hour.
As it required tho returns from
Waiheo to decido tho contest be
tween the district officers and many
wero very much interested in tho
result there was very littlo slcop
for the peoplo in the District that
night.
Tho following morning a largo
crowd of peoplo formed a broom
procession and marched around
the town and then to tho depot and
took the train to Kahului where
they marched to Superintendent
Fillers houso who furnished tho
boys with a train to tho homo of
Honorable II. P. Baldwin. Tho
whistle was kopt sounding and a
jollier crowd has novor been seen
than thoy.
Mr. and Mrs. Baldwin met them,
each carrying a broom emblematic
ot tho clean sweep tho party had
made. "When tho boys rotumed
to town thoy wero still as happy as
could bo but not ono could speak
above a whisper.

in grand stylo Thursday night in
their now templo in Kahului. Tho
occasion being tho opening of tho
now templo for tho first timo. A
reception was glvcu in tho temple
after which dancing was enjoyed in
tho largo now warehouse of tho Ka
hului Railroad Company. Tho room
was tastefully decorated with ferns
and darped with American, Hawaiian
and International Code signal flags.
Tho floor was excellent and the music
was all that could bo doslred.
Several hundred persons wore pre
sent and most excellentrefrcshmcnts
served to tho several hundred guests.
The reception and danco was a
grand success and all enjoyed a most
ploasant evening. Tho guests in
cluded nearly all of tho best people
ot Maul and a number from Honolulu.
