Aaerican Forestry
Honored Abroad
The Forest Service of the United
States Government is to become a
member, of the International Associa
tion of Forest Experiment Stations
Other countries represented in the
association are Germany, Austria
France, Italy, Russia, and Switzer
land the leading countries in the
practise of scientific forestry. Tho
purpose of the association if) to stand
ardize experimental work generally
so that tuff methods of investigation
in each country will be unifoim, and
to collaborate in researcUes"cffect!u
two or mjre of the countries interest
ed.
! That the Forest Service should be
able to enter this association on eqoal
termiwitb the European countric
thru whoso researches, conducted for
many years, a science of forestry has
been built up Is evidence 01 the rapi
Drocress we are making in this
science. Material development an
the practical problems which it ha
presented have absorbed most of ou
energies, and our contribution to lh
world's progress along scientific line
pplicd science rather than in dis
covrrv and research.
The since of forestry hns until very
itely bron altogether foreign to us.
It is hardly ten years since the firt.t
t tempt to introduce scientific fores
ry upon Anu'iicun soil was made,
nd the opening of the Cornell School
f Forestry in 1898 was a pioneer
top in American' education. Nor
was it possible in this field to import
developed science and start abreast
f European investigators by borro.v
ii their results Doth the natural
nd the a 'tilicial conditions which
eterinine forest, utilization are so
itTercnt from those found abroad
that a new science had to be built up
from its foundations.
Americans may well feel proud of
the rapid progress made. That such
results have been secured is primarily
ue to the liberality and foresight of
Congress, which has steadily support
ed and provided for the work by in-
reasing appropriations as success
as been atteincd arid capacity for
xpanding usefulness has been prov
ed. The country is fortunate In the
outcome, for it is now in position to
tilize wisely one of its greatest re
sources and to do what may be done
to avert the national peril threaten
ed by forest destruction. Wo have
now a science and practise of forestry
based upon American conditions, and
re ready to enter upon the stage cf
igher scientific research with the
ther nations represented in the In
ternational Association.
Affiliation with foreign workers
will materially aid us on the way to
ward further goals. Better and bet
ter methods of practical manage
ment can be devised as knowledge of
the underlying scientific problems
becomes fuller. The United States
will profit also thru the criticism of
Is published results by the older and
more experienced foresters of Europe
since a part of the plan of cooperation
is the mutual exchange and discus
sion ol forest publications. The con
ventions of the association will give
opportunity for the discussion of in
ternalional problems, for persontl
contact with foreign leaders, and for
promoting the feeling of fellowship
among workers in a common field
which helps to draw the whole civiliz
ed world together.' '
Foreign forestry will profit from
our investigations, because no other

Oflicial recognition of the progress
achieved in experimental forestry in
the United States was made lh the
invitation extended to the Forester
by Dr. A. Buhler, Director of the
Royal Wurttemberg Forest Testing
Laboratory at Tubingen, Germany.
In bis letter Doctor Buhler said: "In
inviting the United States to join the
association 1 am but expressing the
general desire. You have accom
plished so much and have taken so
capable a hold on investiga'ions that
the work of the association would be
furthered by your membership."
Tho Forester's letter of acceptance
approved by the Secretary of AgricuV
ture is in part as follows:
"The forest Service has always
been deeply interested in the admir
able work of the European experi
ment statious, which have been such
an important factor in raising fores
try from pure empirics to the position
of a true science. Our own problems,
tho exceedingly vital to us, have until
recently had only a limited, local in
terests, and for this reason I thought
best to refrain from participating in
the general scientific work of the In
ternational Association. Now, how
ever, a number of wood'testing sta
tions are well organized, other labora
tory work is well uiider way, and tho
127,000,000 acres of forest reserves
with whose management the Forest
Service is charged offer opportunities
for many investigation which may
contribute to the progress of our
science.
"I sliall therefore be very glad to
have the Forest Service of the United
States Department of A?r'cuure
become a member of the Interna
tional Association of Forest Experi
ment Stations, and promise as
active 'participation in its work aa
circumstance will permit."

IN THE LENS.
About six months ago we sold two kodaks fitted with
special lenses.
The lenses cost more than the kodaks.
But the work turned out by these two kodaks was so
far superior to the ordinary that the owners became
enthusiasts.
Others saw the pictures and ordered special lenses for
their kodaks. As a result we have sold more Goerz and
Zeiss lenses already this year than in all the years we
have been in business. We have always recommended
such an equipment but the price of the special lens made
customers reluctant to try it. Since they have seen the
advantage we are getting orders nearly every day.
If you want the BEST results vet a Goerz or Zeiss
lens. We have several very fine ones in stock and will
quote prices.
