rubber for use in the various Indus
trios. In addition to this there wns
Imported 32ft, 053 pounds of puttn-
percha, which is used chiefly in tho
manufacture of submarine- cables.
Brazil is the chi,ef contributor 'to
the india-rubber supply of the United
States, tho quantity imported from
that country in the ten months end
ln October amounting to 20,750,000
pounds out of a total of 5:5,500,000,
while tho United Kingdom contri
buted 8.500,000, Germany 30,000,000,
other European countries 7,000,000,
Mexico nearly 3,000,000, Central
America a little over 1,000,000, and
l,h East Indies over ', 000,000 pounds.
All or tho rubber sent from t.he
European countries to the United
States is of course, the product of
non European sectio.is of the world,
chiefly colonics of tho various coun
tries from which it is sent.
This tfrowlnir demand for india rub
ber and the reduction of tho natural
supply owing to the crude and often
reckless manner in which the supplies
arc gathered from the rubber, forests
tf South America and Afriea have
resulted in tho establishment of rub
bor plantations in India, Ceylon, tht
Malayan Peninsula and Java, as well
as in Hawaii where 'hey aro now
only in the growing stage. Expcri
mcnts made in establishing rubber
plantations in Java, the Straits
Settlements and Ceylon have been so
successful as to justify the belief that
the rubber production of the world
will, in the not. distant future, come
largely from cultivated inVtr ad of
from the natural rubber trees as at
present. Indications seem to justify
the belief that the Philippine and
Hawaiian Islands aie capable of pro
ducing large quantities of this article.
Data collected by Philippine botan
ists and collectors show that the
climate, soil, and other conditions of
the Philippine Islands'aro favorable
to rubber and guttapercha, and
Government nurseries have been
already established in the islands for
the distribution of rubber plants for
use of rubber plantations. In Hawaii
this new industry is entirely the
creature of local enterprise and the
cultivation thus far is promising of
most satisfactory results. -Ad vcrtisci
