LOCALS
A distinct earthquake was felt on
Maui and throughout, the group last
Friday night at 11.45. The tdiock
lasted some seconds but did no
damage.
An order came from Washington
Saturday from the Department of
Commerce and Labor, to release nil
the 72 stowaways on the Kuneric
and allow them to land, excepting 6
criminals classed as "undesirable
citizens."
They were oil immediately allowed
to land and are now free on shore,
including the five-year old boy who
stowed away to join his father here.
The order is a complete reversal
of previous order? by the depart
ment. It was just in time to stop
habeas corpus proceedings in behalf
of the stowaways, in the federal
court.
The Maui Shinbun, the Japanese
news paper is the oldest and best for
advertising purposes among the Jap

There will be special services at
tho Church of the Good Shepherd to
morrow morning. The confirmation
service will be at 11 o'clock, at which
there will be special music. The
preacher will be Uishop Restarick
D. O.
Upon the invitation of Rev. John
Nua, pastor of the Kaahumnau Na
tive Church, and Rev. R. JJ. Dodge
pastor of the Wailuku Union Church,
Col. French of the Salvation Army
will address a union meeting .at the
Kaahumanu Church at 7:30 tomorrow
Sunday evening.
The Waihee Endeavor Society had
a picnic all by themselves on the
Fourth. Over fifty young people en
joyed themselves on the beach in
games aud sports.
On June 30th. several churcheB in
the Kula and Honuaula districts met
in a Sunday School convention at
Keawakapu. In all $133.70 was given
to Rev. R. B. Dodge to be deposited
in the Wailuku Bank toward the
much needed repairs of the old
church.
Dr. Geo. S. Aiken will be in Puu
nene at the Club House on or cbout
the 23rd inst. to remain about one
week. He will be prepared to do any
kind of dental work.
PERSONAL MENTION.
D. W. Di'scoll of Paia went to Ho
nolulu to bring home his children who
have been in school for the past live
years in Honolulu.
Miss Hattie returned to Honolulu
on the Claudino this week. She has
been visiting her brother James Hat
tie of the Kahului Railroad office, who
was recently married.
Father Maximal went to Honolulu
Wednesday. He expects to return
today.
Arthur Douse received word this
week of the serious illness of his little
daughter and took the Claudine for
IIouolulu where his w ife aud child are
visiting.
F. W. Hardy and son, Hollis, went
to IIouolulu on a vacation Wednesday.
The Bishop of Honolulu with his
daughter Miss Constance, her friend
Miss Buinham and the Rev. A. L.
Hall arrived in town by the Mauna
Loa last Tuesday. They visited
Kahului and Puuneue mill on Wednes
day and afterwards visited the Yos-
enite of Maui. On Thursday they
took train to Paia on their way to
Haleakala.
Bishop Restarick came to town
this week to confirm a class of twen
ty candidates at 11 o'clock on Sunday
morning.
Judg6 and Mrs. A. N. Kepoikai
took Ihe Mauna Loa for Hawaii Tuea
day evening where they will spend a
few days in Kona. The Judge is com
billing business and pleasure and
after attending to estate matters he
will visit at Waimea.
Attorney J. M. Vivas was a pas
seuger to Hawaii last Tuesday. He
has not been in good health for some
weeks and while he goss partly on
business he hopes to be benefitted by
the trip.
Mr. Ferdinand Hons of the Kahu
lui Railroad Co. returned Tuesday
from Honolulu where he was married
to Miss Mary Chilingworth. On their
home coming some of their friends
had placed over their residence the
following sign:
"This house is now uuder new management."

eased to Okamuro for a term of 10
years, from September 1, 1906, at
$50. per annum.

all buildings and improvements there
