HONOLULU, September 10. The tug Navigator arrived back in
the harbor last night with an accident to the machinery which occurr
ed 2,")0 miles after leaving here.
The Afong case will be reopened on the application of Henry
Atone and Mrs. Burns.
Ralph llosmer lias been appointed head of the new Agricultural
College, vice Eckart, resigned.
Rosenberg, the bottle man, is under arrest for receiving stolen
Federal property.
SAN FRANCISCO. Sentember 10. Joe Gans won in the fif.h
ound. liritt broke his hand after Gans had him going.
VANCOUVER, September 10. The outbreak of white laborers
against the Asiatics is very serious. Fifty Japanese and many Chinese
were injured. The Chinese and Japanese quarter is in state of siege
and armed to resist an attack. The white laborers within a hundred
miles have been summoned to march upon the Oriental section. Extra
lolijemen are beine sworn in and the mililarv is ready to move on
short notice. Earl Gray has wired a warning from Ottawa. It is be
lieved Canada will apologize to Japan and China and pay damages.
Japanese Commissioner Ishii was present and saw the wrecked
stores after the first attack.
PARIS, September 10. The Cabinet has decided that Morroco be
called upon to pay damages for the attack on the French.
HAKODATE, September 10. A mob chased four sailors of the
Chattanooga who were ashore on leave after the sailors had attacked a
Japanese storekeeper. An investization showed the sailors were to
blame.
PEKING, September 10. Three commissioners have been selected

HONOLULU, September 8. An injunction was granted to Liliha
street residents restraining the Rapid Transit Co. from changing their
time schedule.
F. W. Carter arrived with a herd of thoroughbred bulls for island
ranches.
The chauffeur ordinance lias been abandoned and the appeal with
drawn. County Attorney Cathcart will draw up a new ordinance.
SAN FRANClSCO.Scptember 9. Gans is the favorite in the fight
today, 10 to 6.
TANGiERS, September 9. Raisuli, the bandit, has issued an
ultimatum that he be granted protection and be appointed as Pasha
before he will release McLain.
PARIS, September 9. France has invited Spain to unite in send
ing an army of 15,000 men against the- Moors.
LONDON, September 9. A modus vivendi has been concluded
between the United States and Great Britain concerning the New
Foundland fisheries, ending in the renewal of the former agreement.
' VANCOUVER, September 8. In a great labor riot here today
2,000 Chinese were driven from the city and 115,000 worth of property
was destroyed. The police prevented an attack on the Japanese.
AUSTIN, Texas, September 8. The International Harvester Co
has paid a $30,000 fine.
LONDON, September 8. Jarvis, the British champion, won the
15 mile swimming race in 3 hours and 20 minutes.
SAN FRANCISCO, September 8. John D. Spreckels, in a damage
suit brought by the receivers of the Pennsylvania Sugar Co., says that
the Spreckels' interests do not own or control any interest in any
American sugar refinery in addition to the Western Sugar Co.
The transport Thomas sailed yesterday with nine troops of the Cth
Cavalry and a detachment of field artillery.
Four more suspected cases of plague have been reported.
HONOLULU, September 7. Work has begun on the fortifications
at Diamond Head.

HILO, September 0. - A sharp earthquake occurred at 8 minutes
to 7 last night, affecting ail Hawaii, especially Kohala, Papaikou, and
Kau. A second slitrht shock was fnlt 30 minutes later. Buildings in
Hilo creaked and swayed with a long movement, and foundations
trembled. Bottles full of liquid were upset. It is the general opinion
that this earthquake was the worse since 1882. Communication with
the volcano was interrupted.
Captain Ottwell expects to advertise bids for the construction of
the breakwater in two months. Work begins in February. Suitable
rook has been found. ' Captain Ottwell has gone to Puna.
