of which were under two minutes. Maikai was the winner in one

Carlos I., The late King of Portugal has rsigned since October
19th, 1889. lis was born September 28, 1803. He was a son of King
Luiz I., and Queen Maria Pia was the daughter of King Victor Em
manuel II., of Italy. He,was also a descendant of King John the IV.,
,ho was called the Restorer as it wns lie who wrested Portugal from
Spain. In 1905, when the present head of the Bi aganca family visited
King Edward VII., the historical friendship of Portugal and England
was clearly in evidence. Carlos married the Princess Marie Amelia,
laughter of Philippe d'Orleans, Conite do Paris on May 22, 188fi. Their
sons are Prince Louis' Philippe, heir apparent, born 1887, Prince
Manuel, born 1889.

Two Santa Fe
Officials Are Here.

cheson, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad
arrived in Hila on business in connec
tion with the ohia tie contract r.iade
by their company with the Hawaii
Mahogany Lumber Company. The
officials are Mr. J. S. Carton, who is
head of the Santa Fe's tie depart
ment, and Mr. W. II. Jones, who Is
the lie in spot tor of the road. They
were accompanied to IMo by Mr. E.
II. Cant and were met here by Mr.
W. W. Harris, manager of the local
company, who hu'ries his two visitors
off to the forests early this morning.
In accordance with the terms of
the contract between the two con
cerns, all ties ars to be examined nnd
accepted or rejected on Hawaii, be fore
shipment. This will involve in
spection and testing being done in
the mountains, and the work will fall
upon Mr. Jones who will remain on
this island for the purpose. It has
the great advantage of preventing
the shipment of ties that are not up
to the Santa Fe's standard, saving
freight and loss of t'nie.
