The Wailuku-Makawao Teachers
Association held its regular session
for tho spring term at the,-Pain
school-House on Monday, iiay loin
Thore was a good attendance, some
thirty-live teachers answering to
tho roll-call.
ftcr the singing oi tho national
anthem Miss Mary Fleming read a
carefully prepared paper on moral
culture in tho schools. Tho senti
ments so gracefully expressed by
Miss Fleming seemed to be shared
bv all present, as no discussion
followed.
J. Vincent made a few remarks
on tho topic of school agriculture,
He had heard of tho surface-mulch
ing practiced in the so-called "dry
farming" of the West, and bad
found it useful to a certain exten
in Kula.
Mr. Medeiros gave a talk or rath
er a rcading,on the subject of pat
riotism. Tho talented young edu
cator from tho wine-growing dis
trict doubtless considers his own
ideas in this topic too valuable for
ZSS general distribution, and very sue
13 cessfully avoided the expression of

Miss bholtz reatl a paper on
Z2 primary physiology, which follow-
3 ed witli great exactness the outlines
Z3 for that branch as prescribed by
Z3J the Course of Study, and which
3 was otherwiso quite unobjection
able.
In presenting a paper on tem
perance, Mr. w. i. wens dwelt on
tho recent visit of Air. Woolley to
the schools. Ho considered Mr.
Z3 Woolley's mission , to have .been
Z2 reasonably effective, six girls of the
13 kaupakalua school having taken
Z3j tho pledge as a result of tho cam
paign, the anti-prohibition senti
ment among tho boys, however,
apparently remains intact.
Mr. II. M. Wells discussed the
daily lesson-plan now required to
bo written by the teachers. Ho
explained that its main purpose
was to enable the school author
ities to keep tab on the work of the
teachers and to assist the teachers
themselves in adopting and adher
ing to systematic and definite met
hods in their work. Questions as
to just how the teacher was to writo
her plan so as to exhibit hor met
hod and still find time to do any
thing else failed to elicit any very
specific information.
Miss Steele read a collection of
interesting extracts from various
educational publications regarding
the benefits derived by the schools
from the preparatory work of tho
kindergarten. The tone of tho ex
tracts was indeed beautiful; and
the prevailing opinion after hear
ing them read was that an institu
tion so highly recommended as tho
kindergarten must bo all light,
Miss Fleming thought that our
national heroes receive too much
praise, ino liero oi the torum or
the battle held is not really moro
admirable than tho hero of tho
potato-patch. The dignity of hum
ble effort should bo impressed upon
the pupils. Just how'this is to, be
done Miss Fleming did not say
seeing that the hero of tho potato-
patch still remains in deep,tliougl
honorable, obscurity.
A discussion regarding tho dis
position of the Atkinson memorial
fund, to which Maui teachers con
tributed largely brought out the
fact that nothing septus to have
been done towards carrying out tho
intentions of tho donorB. Several
of tho contributors expressed th
opinion that if nothing is to be
done, thoy would prefer to have
their money back. Air. Hardy was
appointed a committee of ono to
communicate witn xvi r. u. w. nam

todv of tho Association.
AIcs8rs. Copeland, Crook and W,
