Race issue. To the incalculable injury of the Hawaiiaus a
few of their number ar continually bringing forth the race ques
tion and urging the appointment of one of their race to office sole
ly on the ground that he is a Hawaiian
No agitation could be of greater harm to the race than this

iust demand and the coercinir methods that some of those
lows are persuing is a disgrace to the community.
Ability and honesty should be the stauJard required of any one
who aspires to the honors of public ollicos and the race issue
should not enter into the question at all.
No whiteman who could command even passing notice hxa sug
gested the drawing of the color line nor advocated the election or
appointment of a single whiteman solely because he is a whiteman
and why a handful of agitators of the Hawaiian race should be for
ever harping on this question is a mystery.
The llawaiians as "a class have at all times been fair with the
whites in this county and have proven conclusively at, the polls at
each election that they are as ready to support a white man who is
just to them as they are to support one of their own race. The
whites here have shown their appreciation of this friendly feeling
on the part of the Hawaiians by working as hard for the election or
the appointment of a Hawaiian as any Hawaiian has ever done for
the election or appointment of a white man. For the benefit of any
one who may doubt this statement we would refer them to the
election returns at each election and asft them to note the vote re
ceived by such men as Baldwin, Dickey, Hayselden, Coke, Church,
Henning, and others.
Among th9 great majority of the Hawaiians there is no such
thing as race prejudice nor does any such feeling exist among the
whites. In spite of the splendid support given the whites by
their Hawaiian brothers few white men have sought political
honors but havre assisted the Hawaiians to secure office wherever
it was thought they were competent to fill the office. As a result
of this the pay rolls of the Territory and of each county will show
that the Hawaiians receive many times as much money in salaries
as the whites do and the whites are perfectly satisfied that this
should be the case.
The great majority of Hawaiians are not in sympathy with the
schemes of the few of their race who are forever seeking to ad
vance -their own private 'ntpr3Ets to the detriment of the Hawa
iians at large. V .
The following from the Evening Bulletin of the 2Gth instant has
called forth bitter indignation toward those who have taken this
course to gain their ends.
1 "If Campbell will not appoint James Keola, as Maui's assessor,
to succeed W. T. Robinson, who resigned recently, his appoint
ment will not be confirmed bv the Senate." The above remarks
were made by one who is in a position to know what is being done.
"A letter has been prepared and is being sent on to the other is
land members of the Senate asking them to oppose the confirma
tion of Campbell's appointment, when the Senate meets. Keola
has been and is the senior deputy. assessor of Maui. It is there
fore nothing but fair that Keola phould be give the preference. It
was generally reported on Maui that Judge McKay, of Wailuku,
may be given the assessorship of Maui, he being, in the opinion of
Treasurer Campbell, the most competent man to hold the position.
The Hawaiians are speculating on this proposition and the Hawa
iian politicians are watching the outcome of Campbell's delibera
tions." "
"Some of the Mauians, who are in town, claim that a Hawaiian
should be appointed in Robinson's place, instead of giving the as
sessorship to McKay. Should McKay get the position, they say,
it shows most clearly that Campbell has no use for Hawaiians.
With the appointment of. McKay as assessor of Maui, all the is
lands would be controlled by haole assessors, leaving apparently
no opportunity whatever for any Hawaiians to get the assessor
ship in the future."
In the first place the man who made this statement happens to
be well known on Maui aud it is known thaf he is not in as close
touch with his own race as he might be.
His statement that Mr. Keola is the senior deputy is not true.
Mr. Dunn is the senior deputy and uot Mr. Keola.
The plan to coerce Treasurer Campbell into appointing any one
against his judgment is an insult to the treasurer and is probably
being agitated by the Bulletin's informant, with the hope of lessen-
.' ine Mr. Keola's chances of anpointmeno. We do nor. believe that
Mr Keola is a party to any such tactics. ,
Treasurer Caupbell should make the appointment according to
his best judgment aud will doubtless do so without regard to the
renegades of the rupblican ranks.
