coerciveness, and more than enough of the fellows who use it as a
political weapon. As for confirmation, no man from Maui has tlx.
say about that, and in any event the Governor can reappoint a
non-contirmed man after the Legislature has adjourned, and in a
case where the assent of the Senate had been withheld from a good
oflicial simply because he would not yield to political dictation, the
Territorial Executive would be justified in taking that course. U

There has been no general opposition to any candidate here and

Lahaina Needs a
New Schoolhouse.
Honolulu, May 27: Superlnten-
lent of Public Inst met ton Babbitt
returned vestetdav morning bv the
Manna Loa from ten days spent
on Maui lookini; alter school matt-
rs.
"''I went to Ilonokawai and Kna-
napal.i to lock into school condi
tions there, ' said the supeiinteti;
lent, "to see if the proposed school
nt Kaannpnli was desirable. I
have concluded that it would be
better to build an additional room
at the school at Honokawai, ' mnk-
ing that a two-room school, and
have the children from Kaannpali
come there. Manager Barkhausen
has agreed to supply water from
the plantation for drinking pur
poses at this school.
Lahaina needs now, or very
soon willj need, n ten or twelve
room schoolhouse. Wo shall for
the present add two lanai recita
tion room:.', and get along with that
until a suitable school buildingcan
be erected.
"At Olowahi, I inspected the
new school site. It is a great deal
better than the old site, and the
plantation has given a supply of
water from a mountain stream.
"Lnhainaluna school is in splen
did condition. Principal Mac-
Donald is doing a great work them.
An old cottage has been transform
ed into a hospital and a now
cottage and a new dining hall
have been erected. The old dining
hall is the oldest building of the
institution. It was the first build
ing erected when the school was
established. It is of adobe. It
will be preserved, partly as a
matter of sentiment. The lower
part will be made into a laundry
and the upper part will be made
into a show place the work of the
school a sort of museum.
it Waihee the children under
the direction of the teacher have
transformed the grounds which
were originally tare patches. A
great deal of manual and agricul
tural instruction has been civen
here. The new teacher's cottage is
nearly completed.
"At Spreekelsville the old cot
tage now used as a schoolroom will
be torn down anil a schoolroom
will be added, making this a two
room school.
'At Keahua the new building is
nearly completed. It is a one
room schoolliouse with teacher's
apartments combined, and will be
read' for occupancy September 1.
The school grounds will be fenced
in and water will be brought to the
grounds'.
"the raia school premises are
pretty dilapidated. The Public
Works Department is planning a
suitable building for this school.
It will be built on a site ti be
deeded by the Maui Agricultural
Company and will contain about
five acres. It will afford ample
opportunity for beautifying and
developing.
''The Haiku school allowed the
need of n good deal in the May of
repairs, a part of which is due to
lack of care in the use.
1 visited the Kaupakalua, the
Mukawao, and' the Keauhou
schools. The last two have 'done
much in the way of agriculture.
"At Keokea a new three-room
building is replacing the old two
room building and will be ready
tv'ptenihf-r l. A new cottage is
also to be built.
"In a general way I can say that
there ii a great improvement in the
appearance of grounds and the
care of buildings since my visit
two years ago. It speaks well for
both teachers and pupils."
