SAN KRANCISCO, May 18. John 1). nnd Adolph apreckels have
filed a demurrer against carrying out the trust clause in the will of
Clans Spreckels., It may be n test of the validity of the will as a
whole. Yesterday Rudolph Spreckels testified in the graft trial of
Pat Calhoun.
LONDON, May IS. George Meredith, the novelist, is dead from

WASHINGTON. May 18. President Taft will take up the ques
tion of changing the hours of labor in the departments by beginning
labor two hours earlier between May 1st and October 1st.
FLUSHING, May 18. Captain Haines has been sentenced to eight
years for manslaughter.
SAN FRANCISCO. May IS. Admiral Sebree and fleet have gone
North to attend the Seattle-Yukon Fair.
ST. PAUL. May 18. Officials of the Great Northern R. R. have
offered a reward of 8,000 for the capture of Simms, the robber, who
held up a train at Moise, Washington, on Sunday.
HONOLULU, May 17. Several fires have occurred at Ewa ami
Waipahu. At the latter place one occurred yesterday but the striking
Japs refused to lend a hand to extinguish it. A majority of Japs are
believed to be read1 to go back to work. Hundreds of strike breakers
are taking the places of strikers. Hawaiians, whites and others are
taking the places of the Japs in the mills.
Hilo Japs are reported to have organized.
The captain of the Dirigo tells a story of awful experience on the
Dirigo now in the harbor.
WILTON, New Hampshire, May 17 Rev. J. W. Sylvester, form
erly pastor of Central Union Church, died here today.

felt here last night. Windows were broken throughout the city.
HELENA, Montana, May 1G. During an earthquake last night
the wall of a house was thrown down anil minor damage was done.

LONDON, May 15. The bill introduced by Redmond removing
civil disabilities of Roman Catholics provides for the removal of the
objectionable clauses in the oath of accession of the British sovereign
in which the ruler is pledged to oppose the Church of Rome and re
peals all acts prohibiting the residence in Great Brittain of Jesuits
and other monastics and their acquisition of property.
ROME, May 14. The cabinet has opposed the naval programme
calling for an expenditure of $50,000,000 for the building of Dread
