There is not an application for a Sun
(. day privilege liquor selling establishment
so far nor is it probable that there will
be. Those who have enjoyed that privi
lege in the past have voluntarily given it
up and none seem to wish to have the
privilege. This means that Maui will be
dry on Sundays and extra hours after the
first of July next.

Judge Rogers of Lahaina assessed a

Grace Still
irt Large
Said to Have Fought Against
His Own Flag.
Anderson Grace, who has been
able so far to shroud his movements
in mystery, whose whereabouts are
absolutely unknown to the police
authorities since the day he went to
get a drink of water at the quarry,
and never returned, has been in the
imelight of notoriety on former oc
casions, and particularly during the
Day 8 of the Empire" in the Phil
tppines, immediately alter the 1 111-
pino insurrection caused a pouring
of United States regular and volun
teer troops into the archipelago.
A negro prisoner confined in Oahu
prison Koeer James, as he is
known here, but Wilmore as he was
known in the Philippines came in
to national notoriety when he de
serted from the United States army
and went over to the Filipinos to
become a leader among them in
fighting against his flag. At the same
time Grace is reported to have been
in the Philippines, and if all stories
are to be believed Grace was a de
serter and a fighter m the ranks of
the Filipino armies against his for
mer comrades.
At any rate Grace soldiered in the
Philippines, and, according to High
Sheriff Henry it is while serving
there that he became partially crip
pled on his right Hide. While team
ing for the government an accident
happened while his team was cross
ing a bridge and ins shoulder was
badly hurt. In another - accident
two fingers of his right hand were
almost taken off and the mutilation
of those members will be a means
of identification of the outlaw.
Roger James' career in the Philip
pines was sensational. His crime in
deserting to the enemy became one
of the conspicuous stories of the ear
ly days of the insurrection. He was
captured, finally, and sentenced to
a military prison, but escaped. He
came to Hawaii, about the time that
Grace arrived here, and was arrest
ed on a charge which landed him
for a long term in Oahu prison, au
it was while serving there that he
was identified as the notorious dc
serter. After his term is finished
here he will be turned over to the
military authorities for further pun
Oient.

HONOLULU, May 10. Cap
tain Baker of the police force
yesterday morning disguised him
self as a detective and did some tall
thinking quite like Sherlock Hoi
mesque. His mental calculator was
set to work by a Chinaman who pre-,
seted himself at the polide station
with a grievance and without his
more ornamental teeth. The pake
complained of being with force
of arms and without justification
by law hit in the mouth by some
unknown with an evil disposition.
' The Chinaman did not know his
assailant but descriced him by re
versed superlatives as being i
young man with a let arouned his
neck and a light hat on his head
With this scanty information, Cap
tain Bake; sailed out to the dance
hall which his police experience
has taught him to be a starting
point for most misdemeanors of the
kind Inquires among those who
were still treading the mazy result
ed in learning that "Voting Thron-
ton'' had been around the place
with a light hat and a lei. So Baker
came back to the police station and
hunted np the address of W. G.
Throntou who is said to be a "bad
egg." When the captain located
him, he had on a lei and a light
hat and a big nick in his right fist
where the pake teeth had connect
ed. The Chinaman at once identified
him and Thronton admitted that
'this was the fit-t that did the woik,'
Thereupon the fist was locked up.
Thronton accompanying it perforce.

an ex-captain of police. He has al
