To Abolish
Saloons
Suggestion That license Be
Given Wholesalers Only
i
Cditor Maui News:
Now that the liquor question is
the topic of the day, allow me a few
words in your valuable columns
The question " upon which the
oters will express themselves is
'Shall we have prohibition?" and
not Are we in favor of saloons?
n company with many others who
ire not users 01 aiconoi 111 11s
many forms, I answer NO to the
first question, and NO to the second.
We are not ready for prohibition,
we may be ready to abolish the sa-
oons. It has yet to be tried out in
the County of Maui, and that is my
suggestion. The Board of License
)inmissioners of the County of
Maui have not had a chance to act
upon this policy, simply because the
people of Maui have not maed the
request. Tho men constituting the
Board for this County are men who
would hesitate not a second to do
the wish of the people in this res
wet. Now is the time to act. Iet
all citizens who desire the experi
ment of abolishing Jsaloons le tried,
to so petition the Board. I At any com
inunity do so, or any body of men in
a community.where liquor is sold
too freely, or where saloons are a de
triment and a cause of annoyance
tending to injure men and morals
(and where can it lw otherwise,)
and thus take one long stride in ad
vance toward the ultimate entire
destruction of the trallic' Cut out
all tho salqon licenses on Maui from
the first day of July, and then have
the wholesalers oltey the law This
will remove the greater part of the
evil, and tlte one against which the
majority of the people are nearly
united. Kauai has done this. They
are in the lead. Ix-t Maui follow.
Then watch Oahu and Hawaii. This
matter should be taken up imme
diately. Where is the Anti-Saloon
I'ague? Get busy. You have the
majority with you there. Leave
prohibition alone. It will come if
the people wish it. No sane man
wants saloons. No sane man wants
prohibition today' f,r Hawaii. We

Prohibition on Maui.
Rev. II. K. Poepoe and J. II. S.
Kaleo, delegates sent out by the
Prohibition Societies of Honolulu,
to gather in recruits for the cause ;
were in Waiuku last Sunday. They
had organized prohibition clulis on
Molukai and in the district of Laha
ina, and during this week have or
ganized several "clubs in the district
of Wailuku.
In the Waikapu district after an
address delivered by Rev. Poepoe to
an audience of over seventy men,
wometrand children, eleven were
enrolled for the prohibition cause
with Mr. J. M. Hennessey for Pre-
dent. "
In Wailuku, where. local enthu
siasts have held meetings and taken
steps to organize a prohibition club
was formed with nineteen members
and tho followering ollicers: Jaa. N.

uiiii heiwa, Treasurer. An enrollment
committee was apixiintcd headed by
Judge J. W. Kalua to carry on an
active house to house canvas und
heart to heart talks for the purpose
of getting votes for prohibition. '
At Kahului a prohibition club
of twelve members was organized
Sunday with Jeremiah for President.
Rev. H. K. Poepoe with his as
sistant, J. H. S. Kalw), held a "
meeting at Waihee, Monday even
ing, ami organized a prohibition
club of sixteen members with Mr.
Minamina Brown for President.
The local prohibitionists inteifd to
leave no stone unturned in their
eilorts to get votes for prohibition.
Rev. Poeixie and Mr. Kaleo left
for Paia Tuevday, to organize clubs
in tho Maktiw.m district.
are more or less saiusome more

e have a local option .iaw.,?iyyr
our statutes, and having failed to
invoke the aid of that law, enacted
for that very purpose, we propose
now, or the prohibitionists do for
us, to attempt to ford the stream by
one leap. 1 be result can Ix? pre
dicted today. Take the first BUp,
alxilish the saloons by petitioning
the Boards, and you will rind us
half across the stream, The next,
step will lie a natural one, the dog
wagging the tail, the people ruling
themselves.
There is not a Board of Liquor
License Commissioner today that
would not do the expressed will uf
the people, why nut give them j.
