Items of Interest
From Molokai.
Last week Duputy County at
torney Eikis Vincent attended the
Pukoo, Molokni iliwtrict court, to
prosecute Peter Dudnit, a juvenile,
charged with noyau It and battery.
The ooinplnning witness was Lucy,
a pupil of the Wuitihni public school.
The trial resulted in the offender Ik.
ing found guilty. Judge t'onrudt
suspended sentence for thirteen
months, and placed the young man
in charge of Mr. O. Tolhsen an lro
tion officer to look nfter him.
Polities on Molokni are quiet.
Theo. T. Meyer is the logical repub
lican candidate for supervisor t" suc
cod hi mself and the republican or
nizations on Molokai declare Theo.
T. Meyer to be their strongest can
didate, and in view of the fact that
Mr. Meyer has been elected three
times in succession to the office of
County Supervisor his strength
as a vote getter is practically con
ceded by all. .
On the democratic side Paia Naki,
E. K. Duvanchelle and O. Tollef
sen are said to Ik aspiring for the
nomination for supervisor, and are
willing to try conclusions with Mr.
Meyer at the November elections.
For the legislature Joel Nakaleka
seems to have the field all to him
self, on the republican side, and
should Nakeleka decline Mr. Dibble
K. Hae is mentioned as a possible
candidate for the House from Molo
kai. On the liquor question Molokai is
practically a prohibition district,
having no -licensed retail or whole
sale booze shop. Cohtary to the ac
cepted belief blind pigs neither breed
nor flourish in this Arcndia of Ha
waii, but there are those who say
Molokai will cast a majority vote
against prohibition
While loitering round the Lahai
na . water front a couple of husky
natives were seen packing a number
n9 oKnotUn 1 AAn tainn rj trtt-n a u tin In
boat lying near. The operation was
repeated a number of times and en
quiry brought the information that
it was nothing but water, as it was
a long dry hard pull against head
winds crossing the channel to Molo
kai, hence' much water was needed
and used. Nevertheless for a short
trip the quantity seemed abnormally
large, but the boatmen evidently
knew their business.
Sealed tenders will be received by the
Board of Supervisors of the County of
Maui, at the office of the County Clerk
of said County at Wailuku, Maui, up to

Waitoku's New
Public Market.
Constuction work on the new pub
lic market has begun, and Con
trantor W. R. Pattersonjis clearing
the ground and making the necessary
excavations for the foundations of
the building on the hill at the cor
ner of Mill and Market streets, Wat
lukM. The workmen are mostly La
hainaluna students and the work is
going ahead quite rapidly.
The big trees around the market
site are leing chopped dowji for cord-
wood, and the old familiar land'
marks will soon Imj only a memory
This part of the work is being com
mented on, since the County will
eventually take over the market from
the builders under lease, and the
County has gone into some expense
to plant rows on rows of trees to
beautify the approaches to Wailuku
why could not tfie trees be saved?
In cutting down the hill the remova
of the trees is perhaps inevitable
nevertheless, as each tree bends and
falls to the strokes of the wood-cut
.ter's axe. the sentiment is: Oh
woodman spare that tree!"
