In view of the need for latter
lights for the towns of Wailuku and
Kahului, and the apparent apathy
of the parties '.who hold the fran
chise for furnishing said towns with
electric lights. We publish the fol
lowing communication on the sub
ject from a practical engineer.

The size of the equipment is the
first thing to consider, which is ar
rived at by a careful canvas over the
territory to bo lighted, so as to de
termine the actual amount of cur
rent used by the three kinds of loads
which should lie estimated separate
ly to get a correct idea of what is
1st consideration, is the commer
cial incandescent lighting loud, lx
ing mostly residential and merchant.

2nd consideration, is the multiple
or series incandescent and Are light
ing load, that is, public streets' and
parks, etc, (Night service.) "
3rd consideration, is the power
service load. (Day service.)
Now take the towns of Wailuku
and Kahului which are situaUid ad
vantageously for one plant common
to both, , which should bo.' located
somewhere between the two towns.
The 1st consideration would lie a
Mult iple Service Connection of about
1500 sixteen candle-power lamps,.
In towns like the aliove this service
would be exacted all night;, every
night in the year without any close
down emergencies. 50 of this load
would bo a conservative estimate to

This current should le 'metered
out to the consumers by a Recording
Integrating Watt Meter, and the
consumer will pay for exactly the
amount of current he consumes.
The rate should lie 15 per Kilowatt
hour. Allowing a slight discount

revenue derived from this Berviee
would approximate $2.50 per lamp
per year, equal $3,750, not consid
ering the discount.
