Approved by the Republican County Convention, Wailuku, Sept. 28, 1910.
The Republican I 'arty of the County of Maui, in Convention assembled,
reaffirmVits allegiance to the Principles, Policies and Traditions of the
Republican Party of the Nation. '
We heartily approve of the work done and beneficial results accom
plished in both National and Territorial administrations, and recognize
the splendid service rendered by our Delegate in Congress; and, belieing
that party pledges should be as sacredly observed as the pledges of indivi
duals, we promise the earnest support of all Territorial Republican offi
cers from, unci County officials of, this County in faithfully fulfilling
every party pledge.
. We heartily endorse the Platform adopted by the Republican Terri
torial Convention, held in Honolulu on September 12, 1910, and pledge
and instruct our representatives in tire coming Territorial Legislature to
support and vote for all measures therein recommended ; and we especial
ly emphasize our approval of the following planks referred to in said
platform:
1
(1J The continuance, so long as she shall live, of the permanent
settlement upon the former Queen, Liliuo.kalani.
(2) The protection of American labor by the employment only of
American citizens or those eligible to become such, on all works of a pub
lic nature, and the rigid enforcement of our present laws relative thereto.
(3) The demand, for the people, of honest, economical, and efficient
administration o( Territorial and County Government by the officers
thereof, and a promise to use every effort towards requiring County offi
cials to spend all public moneys to the best possible advantage; that in
he building and construction of public roads and public works the pub
lic funds shall not be wasted, and cmly honest, competent and faithful
officials shall be engaged to control and direct such expenditures.
(4) That the plebiscite recently taken should be viewed as a conclu
sive expression on the part of the citizens of this Territory in fayor of
the present liquor law, and its rigid enforcement; pledging the Republi
can Party against any changes in the provisions thereof during the coni-
in session of the Legislature other than enacting that all license fees
derived therefrom be turned over to the Counties.
(5) The constant improvement and extension of our public highways.
(6) The improvement and extension of the water supply throughout
the Territory. , ' . '
(7) The adoption' of such a policy with reference to harbor and
wharf improvements and extensions as will materially increase our facili
ties for handling passenger and freight traffic, and reduce the cost there
of to our citizens. '
(8) The enactment of legislation that will provide a homestead with
sli itable house thereon from the public lauds of the Territory for each
of the persons discharged as cured from Kalihi or from the Molokai
Settlement, without charge, und to urge the approval of such legislation
by Congress.
(9) 'We favor an increase of salary for elective County officers.
We earnestly believe in, and hereby pledge, the Republican Party of
this County, if continued in power, to support and vote for the following
local measures: .
1 The material improvement and extension of the public water ser
vice throughout the County, so that an ample supply of pure water for
domestic purposes shall at all times be available to all citizens residing in
our centers of population ;
, 2. The enactment of legislation which, shall provide a fund from the
receipts from rentals of Government Lands within the County, amount
ing to at least 50 of said rental, or by .Territorial Bonds or otherwise,
which amount is to le expended on the construction of a modern drive-
Way around both east and west Maui ; and the continued improvement
on proper grades and along modem methods of construction, of all public
highways throughout the County, like roadways extending from Halawa
to Kalae ont Molokai, and from Mdnele to Kahalepalaoa via Koele on
Lanai;
3. The establishment of parks, playgrounds and places of rest and
recreation on each of the districts of this County;
4- Better facilities for lighting the Towns of Waduku, Kabul ui, La
haina, Paia, Hana, Makawao and other centers of population as they
develop; and, in order to accomplish this end we pledge our Senators
and Representatives from the County to support and vote for such an
extension of power and authority . as will enable us' to take favorable
action in the premises; ,
5. Liberal' appropriations for the care, equipment and maintenance
of our school buildings, court houses, jails and other public institutions.
$. Liberal appropriations for the maintenance, equipment and en
largement of our "County Farm and Sanitarium; and, as an aid in
accomplislwng this end, we pledge our Senators and .Representatives from
this County to support and vote for an annual subsidy equal in amount
to the annual appropriation made by the County of Maul for this
purpose. ' '
'7; Better medical service for the indigent sick throughout the County,
and, with this end in view, the establishment and maintenance of emer
gency hospitals in the isolated districts of If una and Molokai; and
8. An appropriation by the Territorial Legislature sufficient in
amount to construct a modern driveway from the Towji of Iahama to
Lahainaluna.
Proud of the history made by the Republican Party, nationally, terri
torially and locally, and of its many past achievements, we now; hind
ourselves to the specific future performance of every plank made in this
and the Territorial platform; submitted as a guarantee of performance
rather than a confession of faith; and, in the accomplishment of these
ends, we earnestly ask the support of every good citizen irrespective of
past political affiliations. , '
The Republican Party pledged themselves at tlie Republican Conven
tion held in Wailuku, September 28th, 1910, to support the above
platform, and ull the Republican Territorial and County Candidates have
especially pledged themselves to support it.
Vote for .the Republican Candidates who are pledged to support such a
good platform. , 1 .
