The petition signed by some of
the citizens of the County of Maui
to have V". J. Coelho run as Sena

tnins it strange mixture' of names;
1 so say those who paw i ' libfore
the day !of tlie Republican Conven
tion held on the 28th day of Octo
ber last, the day Coelho hoped to
be nominated by the Republican
Party as Senator. There were a
few Republican names on the peti
tion; a large numler of Democratic
and Home Rule names.
The query is; If Coelho had
Wn 'nominated at the above men

above parties would he belong?
Perhaps lie wouldhave affiliated

Kuhio has obtained, since he has
lieen in Congress fifteen and a half
million dollars for the benefit of
the Territory of flawaii.
The administration in Washing
ton is Republican and the adminis
tration in Hawaii is also Republi
can. Elect Kuhio and a Republi
can Legislature and he will continue
to obtain several millions for the
lienefit of Hawaii. ' ""

A vote for Kuhio means more
Federal money to Ik; spent in
Hawaii. ' ' ' '
One of the most important items
le obtained for Hawaii is an appro
priation of $150,000 for the Bacteri
ological Experimental Station on
'Molokai, and obtained an ann'ual
appropriation of $35,000 for the
expenses of this Experimental Sta
tion and for studying the leprosy
disease in order to discover a cure
for the 6ame.
Link . McCandless states that, in
his . platform and in his speeches
round the Islands that he is against
immigration.
If he. should be able to carry out
his policy in this respect and shut
out . European immigration the
inevitable result would be that the
plantations would have to import
laborers from the Philippines and
Porto Rico which are American
colonies, and laborers from these
two countries cannot therefore be
shut out from coming to the Ha
waiian Islands.
These people are not desirable
people to become citizens for Ha
waii, but the Plantations would be
forced to iinporl them if they could
not get laborers from European
countries, that is, Portuguese. The
Portuguese are industrious and
make' good citizens' and are the best
immigrants 'we can import,, but
Link McCandless wants them shut
out.
More Evidence of Prosperety.
The Maui Dry Goods & Grocery
Co., Ltd., in their policy of ex pan
sion have purchased the business
of A. Fernandez, Jr., of Paia,. and
will shortly run that end as an ad
junct to their main store in Wai
lukil. Frank Medeiros w ill be placed
in charge of the Paia division, and
the Maui Dry Goods Co. figure on do
ing a nice little business at that end
With this additional investment,
the Maui Dry Good Co. now operate
six departments and branches. The
Capital stock of the Company .will
in all likelihood le increased, and
their friends in Paia, Makawao and
contiguous districts allowed tho op
portunity of acquiring some of : the
stock. ' The disposal of this stock in
that district will probably be an
easy matter, lis the stink has been a
steady dividend payer for the past
five or .six years shice its iticoriMira
tion. : The business acquired in Paia
is simply the store business oL Mr
Fernandez, including buildings
horses,1 wagons and ether items ne
ccssary to the proper conduct of
general store business,, . . '
