Rev. John W. Wadinan of Honolulu is
ependlog a few day on Maui. c
Antone Tavares wap in town this week.
He brought his smile with him.
Who ever saw a policeman on duty on
any street except -market after sundown?
C. E. Smithies, the National Bank
Inspector is on Maui, on his semi-annual
tour.
Kahului harbor presented quite a busy
appearance ail this week. As ia.it as one
steamer left her berth another came iu to
take her place. '
James Coke, has been on Maui this
week. Jim,' can't keep away, but finds
it necessary to come over once in a while
. to keep everyone happy.
Dr. Carey left Thursday evening for
Lahaina, where he will remain for a few
days before going over to Honolulu. The
doctor is seriously contemplating a trip
to the Orieut.
The Congregation of the Wailuku
- Union Church will hold the regular Sun
day evening services at 7:30 iu the Kin
, dergarten rooms of the Alexander Settle
ment House. Rev. Judd will preach.
Richard Questroy, the carpenter who
fell twenty two feet from the roof of the
new school house at Camp One, about
two weeks ago and severely injured his
foot, is able to be about again with the
aid of crutches.
The new sidewalk on Main street is
very good a far as it goes, but it goes
too slow and stops too quick. The people
will have plenty of use for the whole line
, ! during the coming winter season Let
the good work proceed!
The new ball grounds are gradually
being completed. The diamond has been
laid out, and. the grand stand is being
erected. The grounds are of ample Bize,
and it will be a mighty swat that will
send a ball over the fence on the new
grounds. If the ground around "third
base were graded off more it would make
the position much easier to play, and
also enable the catcher to more accurate-
t ly Judge his throws to the third sack.
As it is now it is a gradual rise from
, home plate to third and 'many swell
meant throw by the catchers will hit the
dirt before it reaches third.
One of the first to remove the unneces
sarand unsightly fences is the Alexan-
' der House; These people have gallantly
taken the initiative and the result is
highly commendable. The appearance
of the Home with its pretty lawn border
ed by a beautiful hedge gives an impres
sion of comfort with the attendant faith in
the town officers to protect its property.
x' People argue that feuces prevent cattle
etc., from entering the grounds, where
as, were the fences removed additional
, care would be taken to prevent such
trespass, and the appearance of the town
' would be much improved in consequence.
Last week we had with us Mr. Richard
Delafield Shipman who was touring the
islands while en route to New York City
to visit relatives. Mr. Shipman is en
gaged in teaching at the Boone Univer
sity, Wuchang, China. He will remain
but a short time in New York and return
at once to chosen field of labor. Mr.
Shipman enjoys the distination of being
one of the few young men who, not being
- - under tbe necessity of earning their living
have devoted their time, talents and for
tune to teaching those less fortunate than
. themselves. Mr. Shipman was much
taken with the beauty of Maui, visiting
several points of interest and leaving with
regret that time compelled a hasty departure.
The Wailaku Orpheam.N
The past week the first really
good show that has visited Maui in
some time came to the Orpheum.
This house is quite an addition to
the town. While not very preten
tious, yet it is roomy and airy, and
compares favorably with any of the
vaudeville theatres in Honolulu,
and is larger than any of them.
Wailuku is a good show town for
its size, and we hope to see more of
the companies coming over from
Honolulu, than heretofore. The
Savoy Vaudeville Company was
obliged to cut short its engagement
here on account of the diptheria
scare. Members of the company
are under contract to tour the
Orient and Australia and they felt
they could not afford to , take any
chances of being shut up on Maui,
no matter how remote that chance
should be.
Stock Holders Meeting.
The regular annual meeting of the
Stock Holders of the Baldwin National
Bank will be held in its banking rooms
on Tuesday January loth, 1911 at 10A. M.

Commercial Happenings.
Continued from Page I.
antics. It reached high figures last
Wednesday, when 1177.60 was bid
and f 185 asked. Late that day 10
and 10 shares sold at 1 180, but the
next morning there was a' slight
drop and 10 shares sold at 179.
There were no more sales until Siit
urday, when 10 shares changed
hands at 177. The slump has con
tinued since, the stock being quoted
now at 1172.60 bid and $177 asked.
other Maui arocaa.
Although a very large numler of
stock deals have been put . through
during the week, no other Maui
properties have figured in the trans
actions. Haiku, Paia and Olowalu
have remained firm at 150 asked.
On Tuesday and Wednsday both
Paia and Haiku had ''nibbles" at
125 but they did not amount to
anything. No Wailuku is on the
market and nobody is seeking it out
at prevailing figures. While the
last of Wailuku was at 175, it is
next to certain that that price would
hot prove attractive at present. On
Saturday Wailuku paid a dividend
of $1.50 a share, or a total of
$45,000.
OTMtn Trt&N MAUI.
v Stocks other than-those of Maui
have also had their ups and downs.
YVaialua has probably been the hard
est hit in the past few days, the
McCrosson water scheme, which is
treated elsewhere in the News, hav
ing the effect of forcing the stock
down from $91.50 bid and $92 60
asked on Friday to $87 bid and
$90.60 asked now. Ewa has settled
from $27.25 bid and $27.75 asked
to $27 and $27.50, while Oahu has
gone down from $26 60 bid and
$26.75 asked to $25.50 and $26.
McBryde and Olaa are $3,875 bid
and $4 asked. A private cablegram
shown to your correspondent just
before this writing states that Hono
kaa is $10 in San Francisco, al
though the local figures are $10.50
bid and $10,625 asked. The same
despatch quotes Hawaiian Conrmer-
cial at $32.25 over there 75 cents
below the local market.
. aUQAP) RCVIVCB QUICKLY
' Honolulu, Dec. 13 (Aftornoon)
The cable of yesterday, quoting
sugar at 3.86 in New York, which
caused so much uneasiness here
(particularly among small holders
of stock) was completely knocked
out this afternoon by a cable an
nouncing sales in New York at 4
cents. Thus the market declined
19 cents per. cwt. in one day and
advanced 14 cents per. cwt. the
next! 1 This is the most remarkable
happening of a whole year of light
ning changes in the sugar situation,
assuming, of course, that the cables
are correct. Jt may be stated, how
ever, that the opinion now prevails
here that a mistake was made some
where in transit in the figures of
yesterdays message, and a correction
by the cable company is looked for.
