Continued from Page I.
bo mado on Honolulu. It will
revolutionize conditions, nnd tho
town, in order to bo orderly, must
bo, practically a wide open place.
I realize tlint this statement is para
doxical but it is true. ,Crap shoot
ing is more popular with tho average
soldier than a biblo lesson and they
are sure to seek the society of
women whoso stopping places are
not always among polito society.
If I am, a judge of such things, and
I think I am, it will bo a fatality.
There is a section of Washington
D. Q. that becamo notorious through
the establishment of military head
quarters during the war and
"Hooker's Division'1 has been a
red light district over since. I
cannot see anything good for Hono
lulu coming out of tho. transfer nor
can I see the advisability of kicking
against the move. That man Bill
Taft will see that Honolulu gets
anything that's coming to her, if
the people simply express a wish
not to have it.
I understand the Puuneno Ath
letic Club has raised enough money
to buy a shell with which they pro
pose to como down here and wipe
up the water with the Honolulu
boat boys in the middle of the pud
dle. I am pleased with their grit.
Tho.local lads are of seasoned tim
ber and the Puunene boys may have
as hard a time as tho Cienfuegas
boys in Cuba used to have when tho
Santiago boys went down to clean
'em up. But there is a chance and
it would add to the interest of the
game if tho Maui boys would win.
Sports, aside from baseball, have
gone glimmering hero and oven
baseball does not have tho same
support it once had. There seems
to bo more interest shown in the
coast reports of the big league games
than in the local fourteen innings
small score games on the back lots.
A few years ago there was a
woman tourist here who visited the
volcano and thereupon declared
that next to the Southern Cross it
was the biggest fake she had come
across in her travels. Mebbe so.
I mention it merely because the
cross is visible in Honolulu these
nights and oven the staid old kama
ainas go out after dinner and scan
the heavens for it. Perhaps1 it is
not as much as its reputation calls
for but it is worth looking at for all
of that. Of course tho woman who
declares the volcano in the class
with fakes must be without fire in
her soul and sentiment in her
makeup. The volcano, next to
Haleakala is the greatest show place
in the group. ,
It occurs to tne that the Honolulu
people are the hardest to satisfy of
any within my ken. They howled
years ago for a detachment of boI
diers and they petted the boys who
crossed over to the deadly fever
stricken Philippines. I should say
that they held their arms open for
the first detachment of volunteers
but as time passed the space be
tween the public's hands lessened.
By and by it was a near-fist the
boys met anu it tne trutn was
spoken it should have been a gun
in some instances. Well tho same
thing is being reacted, or perhaps
tho play is long drawn out, for the
despatch that reached, here today is
to tho effect that it would bo a de
tachment of three thousand soldiers
in the infantry class that would be
sent into Honolulu., A feeling of
regret that there is any use for sol
diers crept over the people. -
It is astonishing how flat the
popularity contents in tho local
theaters have fallen. It does not
seem to make much difference how
oig a boost a contest is given nor
how largo and valuable tho prizes
may be, there is no enthusiasm
around the places of amusement
and it seems to me that business is
gradually falling away. I learned
thp other day of another sharehold
er who is willing to sell his holdings
and I am sure he would not let go
unless it was through lack of divi
dend days. It is difficult to say
what the cause js for business drop
ping off.' Naturally every opposi
tion house would draw some of tho
crowd but even the opposition is
not doing much. Perhaps tho com
bination is charging too much for
shows that are mediocre m quality.
It will average up about twice what
it Used to be.
It is strange to what lengths some
people will go to accomplish an end,
and strange how a little bit of
scandal in thp right hands may bo
made into a pot of tar. For in
stance: I was informed today that
two residents of Hilo, listening to
the words of children, started tho
ball rolling in tho High School
matter. Then the germ was carried
over to a quarter that had been
nourifhinE an opportunity to wreck
tho life of a woman who had done
much for Hilo. The powder train
was touched and tho bomb was in
tho grand iury room in Honolulu.
Tho woman it was most hoped tho
tar brush would reach seems to
have been vindicated by the jury
and now that the story is getting
put and the fueling of animosity
against the foresaid woman does not
go outside of two homes, the man
who touched tho train is tho one
who feels nutiid. He is - going to
suffer most in a business and social
way. The man who gave mo this
tells me that the best thing Mrs.
Compton can do is to follow tho
steps of Richmond as far as tho
steamer and get aboard. Richmond
left for his home last week.
The Honolulu Rapid Transit Co.,
not being within reach of tho Inter
state commission can issue passes
to whomsoever it will and not bo
Dunished for it. For years past tho
inspectors of tho Board of Health,
there were but a few in the begin-
. . v-i t
nmg, were allowed to nue irev-
Now that the number has been in
creased perceptably the company
has notified the Board that it will
not allow the boys to have tree
rides. I suppose that in the aggre
gate theumber of persons carried
free by -this company would amount
to many thousands of .pesos. As
the return from the government is
not in proportion to tho benefits tho
officials and employees receive, tho
company is not to bo blamed for
the change of '.heart. Tho matter
of franchise has been an important
one to government and company,
and there" is a belief that the gov
ernor did right in turning down
the bill. It is believed by some
that tho franchise of the Honolulu'
Rapid, Transit Company will bo
worth a million dollars and if it is
so there is no reason for putting it
on a Christmas tree. Perhaps the
company will bo more liberal in its
offer for tho franchise two years
henco in which case it may bo ex
tended.
The little Midget of Kohala has
been blown, or has steered itself,
into a turbulent sea and now it
hardly knows, where it is at.
Charges of graft made by Holstein,
now denied by him, and Campbell
who is mixed in the charge, is too
far away to answer, but when ho
returns the Midget may know what
libel sauce tastes like. Of course
there is always tho danger of some
one coming along and testifying to
having heard the charges made. I
do not know much about Holstein
but I cannot think that tho Midget
would manufacture a story as clear
in its details as tho one published.
The Honolulu Iron Works was one
of those in the deal and, of course,
a prompt denial camo from tho
manager of the company. I havo
no idea that there is such a thing
as graft known in the office of the
Superintendent of Public Works
but people will talk. And at tho
same time it would bo interesting
for the editor of tho Midget to take
Ihe public into his confidence .long
enough to say how it got tho in
formation and how it was that
Holstein broke into tho game.
The idea that tho water front is
to bo taken, from Camp Very to
Cassidy's, and transformed into a
parade ground and headquarters for
the military sounds good. It will
do away with tho idea to have tho
sons of Mars in tho center of the
town in such closo prox. to tho'
