" MISTAKEN IDENTITY.
A 8tory That Marshall P. Wilder Tells
Upon Himself.
This Btory la printed on the authority
of Marshall P. Wilder, who alleges
that It Is very funny. He ought to
know. The story Is about himself,
and he has been a professional fun
ranker for a good many yeara. It hap
pened when he was In London on his
latest engagement in the music halls.
"I always followed Consul, the cou
nted monkey, on the bills," said Mr.
Wilder. "One night two well dressed
Englishmen came In to watch the per
formance. They had been sopping up
the national temperance drink, brandy
and soda, pretty freely. They laughed
In the wrong place through all the
earlier turns on the bill. When Con
sul came on they braced up and watch
ed him with attention for a time.
' 'My word,' said one of them to the
other, who had fallen asleep, 'you
ought to see the blighter, old top.
He's lighting a cigar. 'Pon me word
he is.'
"The sleepy one roused a bit peered
uncertainly at Consul, and then he
lopped over on his friend's shoulder.
Ho had fallen asleep again. In a mo
ment hla friend's head Inclined heavi
ly toward the sleeper. The pair were
sound in slumberland when I came
on. Something I said aroused them.
One nudged the other.
" 'What's the brute doing, old. chapT
he asked sleepily. The other gazed un
certainly at the stage. .
"'You really ought to sit up a bit,
old boy,' was his report 'They've got
the blighter telling stories now.'"

An Episcopal bishop In a New Eng
land state was the guest of a friend
during his stay la a small town. The
bishop conducted the services Sunday
morning nnd seemed much irritated by
the fact that his friend In the body
of the church was always about five
words behind the rest of the congrega
tion during the recital of the Apostles'
Creed.
At dinner that afternoon the eminent
divine turned suddenly to his host and
asked, with some asperity:
'John, why can't you 'descend Into
hell' with the rest of the congrega

Stories of Gilbert
One afternoon while drilling the bal
let with extreme strictness Sir W. S.
Gilbert observed that one of the girls
was crying bitterly and making stren
uous but ineffectual efforts to restrain
her emotion.
"What's the matter, my dear?" he
asked, smiling compassionately.
"Oh, Mr. Gilbert," sobbed the woebe
gone figurante, "the ballet mistress
says I'm no better than I ought to be."
"Well, but you're not my dear, are
your" rejoined Gilbert Interrogatively,
On another occasion when the stage
was full a messenger came on with a
parcel for one of the actresses and dis

Bond, who was standing close to the
stage manager, exclaimed:
"Look at that agile creature, Mr.
Gilbert. One would think he were
dancing a pas-seul."
"Yes," was the Instantaneous reply,
"a brown paper pas-seul obviously."

A man doesn't have to be a mechanic to recognize the simplicity of the WHITE motor. If
he is at all familiar with the appearance of motors he will be likely to think, looking; at a
WHITE that some parts are missing. It is all there, however, and whatever parts have been
eliminated result in its efficiency, simplicity and economy of operation. To the average man
the WHITE motor is the most attractive part of the car; because its probability to need repairs is
minimized, and, if it does need adjusting its construction is not so bewildering that he cannot
make minor repairs himself, however little he may know of mechanics.
Five Important Features of White Motors
First of 111, the four oyllnders are east en bloe -that is la one pleoe. This construction gives a rigidity to the crank ease and
keepe the bearings in alignment.
The oyllnders each have a three and three-fourth lneh bore and Ove and one-eighth lnoh stroke. The stroke is very long In pro. '-.
portion to the bore, resulting in Increased power with less effort, which means maximum emoleney and gasoline economy.
There are four forward speeds, with direct drive on tho third, which means a speed for every oondltlon, giving greater road
efficiency, and making It unnecessary to overtax the engine at any time.
WHITS motors are equipped with a honeyoomb radiator la which the cooling surfaoe Is praotloally twice that of any ordinary
kind. This radiator Is the most effloleat of which we know, and, bees use of its high cost, is used only in the better grade of csrs.
A double oiling system Is used. After lubricating, the connecting rod bearings, the oil drops Into the erank ease, where It la
used lu the regular splash system. Besides being a very effective means of lubrication, the eonomy of using the oil twioe Is
apparent. The erank shafteaslng and the side plates on the motor, which wbea removed mske the erank shaft accessible, eon
Ones the oil to the Inside of the motor, preventing a general besmearing with oil whloh would otherwise occur.
