Factions Clash.
WASHINGTON, Jan. 9. Rival tactions clashed at the Jackson
dinner laBt night. Hearst was one of the speakers, and was particu
larly bitter against La Follette and Roosevelt.
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 9. The police have nrrested Charles Hoff
man, charging him with being a confederate of the McNamaras.
HAMILTON, Jan. 9. The U. S. destroyer Spaulding is ashore
at St. Georges, Bermuda. The Drayton and McGraw.are still unac
counted for.
PORTLAND, Jan. 9. The storm here is the worst in the history
of the State. Wires! are down, and the trains are blockaded by snow.
Gold Standard Adopted.
NANKING, Jan. 9. The national association adopted the gold
standard at a meeting held yesterday.
PEKIN, Jan 9: A formal demand for the recognition of the
independence of outer Mongolia was presented to the imperial author
ities by the Czar's ministers today.
SHANGHAI, Jan. 9. A force of 10,000 revolutionists have taken
Shenchott and are advancing on Honan.
MONTREAL, Jan. d. Thirty persons have been killed in a
wreck on the Canadian Pacific railway.
Heavy Storms.
PORTLAND, Jan. 8. This city is stormbound. Train service
between here and San Francisco is demoralized. The damage is es
timated at $200,000.
, NOGALES. Mexico, Jan. 8. Smallpox is raging along the ports
on the Mexican coast. '
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 8. Tveitmoe and other labor leaders have
been reindicted.
PEKIN, Jan. 8. The treaty powers have undertaken to protect
the railway from Pekin to the coast. Great Britain has a large force
on hand doing guard duty.
SHANGHAI, Jan. 8. The armistice has been extended fifteen
days.
SAN DIEGO, Jan. 8 Oscar Bentley, the founder of the Ostrich
farm has been killed in an auto accident.
For Woman Suffrage.
WASHINGTON, Jan. 6. Baker of California has introduced an
amendment to the constitution allowing women to vote.
WILLIAMSBURG, Jan. 6. The Havemeyer refinery is closed
because of over production.
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio, Jan. 6 La Follette advocates the referen
dum and recall as measures safeguarding the rights of the common
people.
, LOS ANGE.LES, Jan. 6. A boiler explosion in the Southern
Pacific shops, has killed two and fatally injured many others..
INDIANAPOLIS, Jan. 6. Oscar Lawlor, who has been attend
ing the dynamite investigation, left for Washington last night to con
fer with Taft and Wickersham.
WASHINGTON, Jan. 6. The funeral of Admiral Evans was an

The planters association has advanced laboreis getting $18 a month
to $20. A bonus amounting to about $51 a year is also allowed
laborers getting below $24 a month.
