THE MAUI NEWS, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 1912
Naliiku Rubber in
Good Sh ape.
Tlie seventh annual meeting of
the Naliiku Rubber Company was
liekl last Saturday morning, in Ka
liului, when tho report of tho man
ager was submitted and the pros
pects of the coming year were re
viewed. , There was generally a strong feel
ing of optimism among the share
holders in regard to the enterprise,
which, whilo slower in coming to a
profit-paying basis than had been
expected, seems to be altogether
sound. It is reported that some
thing like 40 pounds of rubber per
day is now being produced, and
Manager W. A. Anderson believes
that the present year will bring re
turns sutlicient to pay for tho up
keep of the portion of the plantation
now producing, although probably
not the entire running expenses of
the company.
President D. C. Lindsay reported
that stltlffiu'gli it had been found
necessary to call out the full assess
ment on assessable stock, which
had not been contemplated in the
licgiiining, still the new year starts
with bright prospects and with
considerable noney in tho bank to
their credit.
The company has about 400
acres of Ceara trees at tho present
time. During t'he past year the
labor situation has improved,
through the establishment of an
eating house and other conveniences
for the workmen. Roads kave been
built which makes all of tho plan
tatian accessible.
During the past year about 23,
000 trees have been tapped one or
more times, and an equivalent of
about 1200 pounds of dry rubber
obtained. Ten hundred and twenty
six pounds have been shipped, and
returns received from 285 pounds.
The highest price realized was 81.01
per pound. The total cost of tap
ping, collecting, curing, and ship
ping amounted to 85 cents per
pound. The cost for the month of
December, however, had been re
duced to 68.9 cents, and a still
greater improvement in this respect
is expected.

in accordance- with precedents.
However, since my return I have
been made acquainted with the
with the sentiments amongst the
Republicans of the Islands, and be
lieving that there are a large num
ber of Toters in favor of an instruct
ed delegation, I come out flat-footed
with the statement that I will, do
all in my power to secure the selec
tion of a delegation instructed to
vote for the renonlination of Prefi
dent Taft. I beg leave to announce
that I am a candidate for delegate
to the National Convention.
The Republican Committee, for
reasons which I will not now men
tion, has been fit to take an active
part in the. present contest between
Governor Frear and myself for tho
reappointment of the former. This
in the face of my personal request
to Chairman Cooper, prior to my
departure, not to express an opinion
on a controversy between two Ro
publicans unless asked to do so by
. tho Washington authorities. Per
haps on some later day I may have
something to say about the reasons
which evidently dictated this course
, on the part of the committee. As
for myself, I am too good a Itepub
lican to ask the party organization
to take up the fight. I have honest
ly done my liest to present the
reasons why tho Governor shoul
not be reappointed, and will con
tinue to do so.
I am not opposing or attacking
tho best business interests of Ha
waii.
I regard the Republican party aa
greater than myself or even Govern
or Frear, and think its efforts and
tho efforts of tho committee should
be devoted to the successful promul
gation of its grand principles, rather
than towards tho success or defeat
of the personal aspirations of Gov
ernor Frear.
In this connection I desire to say
that I have been assured that the
administration of Governor Frear
will bo carefully investigated by tho
Federal administration before tho
appointment of a Governor is made.
If the investigation is mado in
a full, fair and impartial way I
pledge myself as a citizen, as a Re
publican, and as a representative of
the people of Hawaii, to abido by
tho result of such investigation.
I believe as a good Republican I
cannot do more. As good Republi
cans and loyal Americans, tho ad
herents of Governor Frear cannot
do less.
