CHICAGO, June 22. Now believed Taft will be nominated on the
first ballot. Itoosevelt will not permit a bolt at this time. A hot
tight expected today on platform and rules committee report. It is
predicted that Roosevelt's adherents will hold another convention
later in the summer, and nominate him. There will be no suffrage
plank in the Taft platform. The Tafters have demonstated majorities
11 nearly all votes. On the California contest Rice voted against his
party.

unanimously to impeach Judge Archibald of the Commerce Court for
accepting favors from railroads.
CHICAGO, June 22. The convention: split over the Taft plat
form. 344 delegates refused to vote. The platform was then tied by
vote of 666 to 53. The first ballot gave Taft the nomination by a
majority over all of 44. The vote stood Taft 561. Roosevelt 106, La
toilette 41, Cummins 17, Hughes 2, Absent 7, Present but not voting
344.
Roosevelt backers met later in Orchestra Hall and formed a Pro
gressive rarty with motto Ihou tehalt not oteal. ' Roosevelt was
nominated and accepted conditional upon later action. Sherman will
be the running mate of Taft. Ohio gave Taft 14 delegates, not voting
34. The platform is a Taft document leaning towards protection of
home industries.
BUFFALO, June 22. With a collapse of a dock in the Niagara
river yesterday, more than 250 persons were thrown into the river; 20
were drowned.
CHICAGO, June 21. Talk of democratic coalition with Roose
velt supporters not admitted by Roosevelt, but is common talk. If it

satisfied with prospects of reappointment. Nothing definite until
