Dear Sir: I am aware that Maui
as the best roads in Hawaii, I know
that Maui puts Oahu to shame.
Provide the luxuries of life, and
the progressive and intellectual man
will hot complain if deprived of the
On my last visit to Wailuku, I
rode around West Maui with the
road supervisors. This road is merely
necessity, no one much uses it or
talks of it. Its there, thats all, and
the average Mauian scarcely know
that it exists.
Tbte is an auto road Jo within
ight miles of the summit of Halea-
kala. There is no earthly reason
why Hawaii should not cry to the
world that Auto parties are taken
in a jiffy from the steamer wharf to
the edge of the earth's greatest ex
tinct crater, the rim of which is just
two miles above the smiling ocean.
There is every reason why these
eight miles of roadway should be
built. The fires of Kilauea some
times burn low, the wondrous
beauties of Haleakala, at sunrise
Maui holds in her lap the greatest
possible tourist asset in the world and
not only should the territory indulge
in an auto road to the summit of
Haleakala, but the legislature should
appropriate money for an extension
to the floor of the crater.
in these days, when everyone
owns an auto, it is the luxury of an
auto road to the summit of Halea
kala, that will place Hawaii are the
Map so that people in the most dis
hint parts of the world will know
she is here with- the two greatest
Volcano craters in the world, both
accessible by auto.
Think of it I A spin up to Hale
akala to watch the sunset, a night
in a comfortable hotel on the edge
of the crater where the snow often
alls, and then, in tl)9 morning,
those billows of crimson and purple
and gold, that float from far off
Hawaii, obscure theshimmering blue
sea, turn to fleecy white, and pile
up against the side of Haleakala,
burst up over the rim. and seven
miles from where you stand, turn
ble over the craters edge, a Niagara
of foam, a thousand times broader
There is no thunder of sound but
the fleecy clowds fall down, down,
the face of the crater, a half mile
drop, then bubble up, sweep across
the craters floor, swallow up the
extinct coned that rise a thousand
feet, rise like the waves of the ocean
to your feet, glide down the slopes
to the sea, hiding, mountainside,
cunefields, all, until yju stand at
last in the center of a fleecy sea of
foam that extends everywhere.
Aud only eight miles of uncom
pleted road divorces you daily from
this most wonderful scene from
Gods great picture book. It is a
shame. It is unreasonable that
Haleakala is neglected for a few
mere necessary roads that someone
would build anyway.
I want to ascend Haleakala again.
I want to make the ascent every
time I visit Maui Eight miles of
uncompleted roadway is all that
keeps the world from talking of
Haleakala and making it the great
promotion asset, not only of Hawaii
but of the West Pacific
Want someone build that eight
miles? I dont care if its a philan
thropist, a board of supervisors or a
territorial legislature, but let every
one of us who loves Hawaii and her
scenic splendors, demand that Ha
leakala be hooked up with the world
ahd those puny eight miles of road
way built to her summit.
