Glimpses of Fiji and N. I:

them. I will mention, for the
benefit of my lady renders, the
feathers of n bird called Navoli.
These are most beautiful and can
be obtained for the sum of 20 cents
each. I purchased tho same kind
in San Francisco for 75 cents each.
I remember we were the moat
envied girls on board that day when
wo produced tlieso feathers. Until
then most of the lady tourists had
never heard of- them as a Fijian
product.
Three more days of sea, wind
and ship's monotony. Then wo
entered tho wide harbour of Auck
land, and we bade farewell to our
boat for a while.
New Zealand is too much of a
wonderland to miss any part of,
and we decided to do some railroad
traveling.
How glad we were afterwards,
and how nsjh we would have
missed, had we remained with the
boat, and just skirted along the
coast.
Auckland is a beautifully laid out
town, clean and with a general air
of hustle. The accommoda
tions are excellent, as also is the
express delivery system. A keen,
alert looking man waits all boats,
Iff trains, etc., and in a most capable
manner takes your name vand ad
dress. t Your worry is over. In a very
short time after reaching your hotel
your baggage arrives in perfect or
der. This pleased Alice immensely, as
" she never knew quite how many
pieces of baggage she had, or if they
were even labelled.
We remained some days in Auck
land, visiting its picture gallerys,
theaters, beautiful parks and its
extinct volcano Rangototo.
All this was of great interest but,
as we were both anxious to reach
Rotorua the real wonderland of
Now Zealand we left by the Auck
land express train.
It is a whole days journey, and
was the most disagreeable in all our
tour through the island.
The line, red dustdriftsin througl
imnossiblo cracks. and almost
chokes you but, as this is the onlj
disagreeable trip that we experi
enced, I will not dwell on it.
We arrived in Roturua, the train,
as we entered, running along the
shores of one of the most beautiful
lakes. As we reached the town, a
place to stay at was our next consi
deration. "Let us stay right among the
geysers," said Alice.
"Whakarewarena Hotel is among
the geysers." remarked a voice at
our elbow.
A mile from the city proper, we
found this hotel, right in the center
oMhe boiling spring and geysers.
"We are in luck," said the driver,
as wo reached the hotel. "The
Wairoa geyser is playing well to
day." We looked and there, before
'our oyen, was a gigantic water
column, soaring up and up, until it
seemed to reach the heavens.
"It must lie up 2,000 feet," we
exclaimed.
- "No, shn is going about 300 feet
this afternoon, but she can do a
1000," the driver replied casually.
(To lie Continued.)
