Bon Vicar, the well known tra
veling innn, was in town during the
week, !! is on his usual roinul of
the Maui stores.
Work on the new store building
of the Maui Dry Goods Company is
being rushed by the contractor and
good progress 19 being made on the
iob.
Schooner Defender, Capt. Erick

V. G. Scott again rounding up

"sucklings" to take home for his
many friends on the other side, as
New Years day is near approaching.
Clem Crowd 1 and Wm. Steward
of Honolulu also paid Hana a visit

derk at the Honolulu Police station
and is now spending his vacation
on Maui.
Mr. J. M. Cunningham has join

Cunningham wns formerly with the

.known as a first class alround news

now be able to turn out the best possi
ble kind of work.
Christmas Tree.
Continued from page I.
of the poor who are not remember
ed. Iam not certain whether or
not Wailuku has any of this class
of poor people. If it has, what is
the matter with the suggestion that
the News copy the Tribune
and have a stocking hunting party
Christmai eve. Do not draw any
.line at nationalities, get every race
in the running and make 'em feel
as though Christmas was made for
the poor as well as the rich. I
know there are a lot of good fellows
in and about Wailuku who will
help out if the News will start the
wheels going.
MAY BLOCK PR EAR.
The democrats seem not to like
the idea of having to buck a repu
blican for the next four years and
to avoid it they will try and block
the nomination of Frear. It i3 of
course possible that the confirmation
may be blocked but it is not proba
ble. It is likely some of the big
fellows in Washington will think the
stub end of the party out here is
swelling in imaginary importance
and may stick a pin in Barron and
explode him. The mention of this
name reminds me that:
"Absence makes the heart grow
fonder;
Peroxide makes the ha'r grow blon
der Onions make the breath grow
stronger
Hot air makes the climate warmer"
No one can tell; it may be Bar
ron who has an influence on the
dveather on Oahu. The city seems
not to have heard anything about
Bertram G. llivenburg since he set
Bail for somewhere in the United
States and rumor has it that his
destination was Washington D- C.
What will be coming, no one has
ventured a guess. Whatever the
position or office may be that he is
-after he has not confided in me,
I have a hunch that it may be the
last word in presidential appoint
ments in the Territory that he wont
The more I come in contact with
Senator elect Coke the deeper is my
admiration for him as a legislator.
True enough Jack Kalakiela has
stated that everything credited to
Jim emanates from bis own fertile
brain but those of us who know
Jack don't know where to loot: for
his brain so it is impossible to state
accurately whether a single bright
idea has escaped the confines of his
cranium, or had a place in it. As
I remember it he could not develop
a clue when lie was head of the
soft-shoc-force in tl,e sheriff's office.
But keep your mind on Coke. He
may become a leader of the upper
House next spring and I will
mistaken in my calculations if
does not.
CONCERNING CHONG.
Word concerning Cliong, late
Ik;
he
of
the theatrical trust and the savings
department of the First National
Bank has been received. Accord
ing to a reported confession he took
the money, some 840,(XK) to invest in
films and theaters, some of the films
are in China and out of Chong's
reach because he is in a Yokohama
jail. Lightfoot the lawyer has gone to
keep him from being taken on requi
sition but it's my opinion he will
arrive too late. Cliong seemed like
a good fellow but I heard something
yesterday that changes my opinion
of him. lie left a wife and five or
six children and before going told
his wife he would give her thirty
five dollars, all the mousy he had.
He did this but the little copper
cash he has in his pocket as a lucky
piece must have hatched on the
way over for he had on him nearly
a thousand dollars when arrested.
His wife' wns left on the hands of
his friends and they have provided
for her as they could afford but not
overmuch in the way of delicacies
and the kids have suffered a bit.
Other friends of the fugitive have
got together and raised the money
to send out Lightfoot to help the
fellow and keep Macduff from bring
ing him brck to the officers of the
bank. I take it that Chong had
gotten so deep in the game that it
was fish or cut bait so he cut the
country. He was ungrateful as well
as well as dishonest for I have been
told that Cecil Brown had selected
him from among a lot of Chinese
because he had known him and his
parents from the boy's infancy and
so obsessed was he by a belief in
Chong's honesty that he remarked
the other day that if he knew he
was going to pass out he could think
of no reason why he should not
have left t ie settlement of his affairs
in the hand of Chong. That's going
some for a man like Cecil Brown.
THE PACERS.
Jim Quinn said yesterday that
had he been put in charge of the
Maui horse on Thanksgiving day
he would have won a pile of
money. He tried him, or her, out
yesterday and made good time, so
good in fact that he has a feeling
that when the next race comes off
he will have a majority of the heats.
It was a bad throw at the last one
and Willie Lucas, who attempted
drive did not carry away any laurels
from the track.
BOXING.
Saturday night what may be the
final meeting letweeii Bauersacks
and Madison will bo pulled at the
Bijou. It will be remembered that
at the last one there was little satis
faction at the result. . It Beems that
when the foul was given in the first
fight Madison was so anxious to meet
the soldier again that he offered to
take none of the proceeds unless he
knocked him out. Well, he didn't
do it and got only what coin Dick
Sullivan, the impresario, volun
teered after he left the ring. Dick
says it was only a few dollars while
the soldier gathered in fifty per
cent of the gross which amounted
to more than five hundred. This
time the gate is to be divided, fifty
and fifty with Bauersocks getting
sixty per cent of the fifty and Madi
son forty. There is a rumor that
Madison will win.
