Makawao News and Notes.
(Special Correspondence.)
MAKAWAO Fi-li. 11 On Feb
ruary 7,' Dr. Geo. S. Aiken of
Kahului accompanied by Mr. Spar
ling of the Electric Co., Sun fori!
and Jack .Walker, and Frank do
Ilego entered the crater of Haleakala
in search of "silver sword'" and
after two days of hard work suc
ceeded in gathering nine gunny
sacks full of that rare plant with
which they returned toKaliului, on
Sunday evening.
In the floral parade of 19H,
Dr. Aiken represented Maui with
his auto adorned with "ilver
sword," and took several prizes by
so doing. This year he intends to
repeat the representation in like
manner. The main features of his
idea are to cover the hood and
glass front of his auto with a large
shield, and to have a huge sword
suspended above and running the
full length of the car, the shield
and sword to be fashioned of "silver
sword" from Haleakala. The body
of the motor will also be covered by
the silvery leaves of the plant.
LOCAL NOTES.
The school recently established
amid the new pineapple lands of
Haiku now numbers twenty pupils
with quite a number of grades. Mrs.
Turner who formerly taught at Pu
nahou, has been secured as teacher.
Representative A. F. Tavares of
Makawao is still obliged to go about
on crutches, as a result of an injury
to his ankle, which some time ago
was badly squeezed letween a trunk
of a tree and the front part of his
automobile.
Si nator and Mrs. II. A. Baldwin
of Hanmkuapoko, will depart for
Honolulu on the 15.
It is reported that the Japanese
pineapple tannery at l'auwela will
soon double its capacity.
Large blocks of Ulumalu hui
lands, which are suitable for pine
apple culture, have been recently
sold at $30, per acre, on the average.
On Friday evening, February 14,
the Makawao Literary Society will
hold a social meeting at Dr. W. F.
McConkey's, Paia. It will be in
the form of a valentine party.
Pheasants and doves seem to be
more plentiful than ever in the
Makawao Kula sections since the
close of the hunting season.
On Monday evening, quite an
heavy electric storm took place at
Faia and upper Makawao.
The vegetation is green in Maka
wao and Ulupalakua. Kamaole
has had some rain but the rest of
Kula is still dry. No moisture
came even from the recent kona.
The drought is so severe this time
that some of the big ranches cannot
maintain milk cows to furnish cream
for breakfast coffee, but use the
canned product.
Lahaina News.
The concert at the Parish Hall
last Saturday evening was a rare
musical treat, one of the best that
has ever given in this town. Mr.
K. J. Zedwitz, Mrs. J. K. Bodel,
Mrs. Jones and Miss Hoffman took
part in the entertainment. The
elections of classical music were
beautifully rendered, and were
much enjoyed by an appreciative
audience. The concert was under
the auspices of Msss Lucy Adams.
The Japanese Consul was in Laha
ina on Monday. He received a
cordial welcome.
Mr. McCubbin's infant twin
daughter died on Monday night
Rev. D. W. K. Whife conducted
the funeral at the Wainee Church
on Tuesday afternoon.
The new building, intended for
a dining hall, is far advanced to
ward completion at Lahainaluna.
Another schooner load of lumber
had been received for the Lahaiun
public school.
All the Chinese stores were
closed on Wednesday, and the new
