"Old Timer"
Away Off
Sheriff Crowell paid a flying visit
to Molnkni this week, and Uip
ohject f this trip was to look into
tlm alleged irregularities tlint a
CorrosH indent to the Maui Nkws
alleged to have I'fcn going on at
Pukoo. Tlie result of tlio Sheriff's
investigation is that most of the
statements made ly "Old-Timer"
ire declared to 1: incorrect.
"I went over to Molokai to look
intothe slate of pol ice affairs there,"
remarked Sin-riff Crowell to a Mai i
Nkws mam. "I found that while
there was somewhat of truth in some
of the statements made in the letter
signed 'Old-Timer.' all the story-
was not true.
"The story of the 'hoodlums'
taking the horse from the doctor's
rig, is true enougn, but the doctor
dec-lined to prosecute when asked
to do so by the deputy sheriff. The
doctor asked how old the 'hoodlums'
were and, when informed that the
eldest was less than eighteen years,
said that all the lads wanted was a
good talking t; and to be warned
that any such conduct would land
them in jail, if persisted in.
"The story of the five shots being
fired at a Pake is all moonshine.
The lad who is alleged to have done
the shooting -.as drunk. He is said
to have stood on the end of u lanai
and to have fired a gun into the air.
No Pake was shot at, and the story
is not true as related in 'Old-Timer'B
letter to the Naui News.
"That part of the story that tells
of the deputy sheriff retiring to
Halawa Valley to live, and to watch
that the taro does not escape, is
nonsense. The deputy did take a
trip to the valley for a few days and
that is all there is to that part of
the story."
Sheriff Crowell looked into the
whole matter and, as soon as ; he
landed on Molokai, found that . the
deputy sheriff had written' the
county attorney of Maui asking
what steps he should take in the
matter of the doctor and the "hood
lums." The county attorney re
plied that unless the doctor would
swear to a camplaint, there was
nothing to be done in the matter.
.-'It is a case of grouch," declared
Sheriff Crowell, "and the matter
will adjust itself alright."
The sheriff had a very hurried
trip and could not even find time
to call on Judge Conradt. A sam
pan had to be tak n in a hurry, and
the sheriff "beat it" from Molokai.
