(Continued from 1'nRe l)
a rumored reductinn, a sraling down
nil along tin- line. It is quite what
was to le expected for Koniething
must bo done to enable tin; planta
tions to pay plum-holders an inter
est on tlieir investments. Tt ib re
ported, you will note, that then; is
to be a reduction in agents fees or
commissions. There is where the
shoespinehes some of the companies,
and it is where a reduction will
help out materially. There is a fixed
belief here that the agents, or in
dividuals connected with the Agen
cies of the sugar plantations, are
heavily interested in the companies
they represent. 5ut the theory, or
whatever it may be called, docs not
always work out for, the other day,
it was stated in a meeting that the
president and manager of one of the
largest firms of sugar factors in the
islands owns but a few shares in
one of the largest companies in
their control, and none whatever in
another almost ns important. Also
it is said that the gentleman whose
name is not used was strong in his
objections to dividend paying; he
wanted to store up the money for a
rainy day which his corns told him
was coming. But he was overruled
and today there has come the time
for conservation and reduction.
One of the gentleman returning
from the probe in Washington re
marked the other day that half or
more of all the senators are with
Hawaii and the sugar producing
states in their light against the tariff
but, having pledged themselves to

Conversations with senators and
remarks made hy them, there will
he no free sugar. Conditions will
he Htich that hefore the time comes
there will he no desire for it, and
the tariff will not he taken off. It
is not helieved that this statement
is made with a desire to boost the
market; the man is not a stock
gambler, and cares not whether
they are up or down except as they
may affect his friends who may be
interested. By the way, banks are
calling for margins again and the
call is U'ing nobly met, the few
sales being made to order of banks
having the absolute sanction of the
owners, which was not the case in
1D0O when there was a decided scar
ify of money and thousands of
shares upon which money hail been
l)orrowcd, were sacrificed. There
is money enough now to go around
nearly all of the way.
There is a rumor abroad that the
public is to be deprived of advance
news relative to the Hilo probe. 15y
advance news is meant that which
may refer to something that may
happen. The commission lias de
cided that there is a leak somewhere,
elseSiow could the Hilo and Hono
lulu Vewspapers get so much good
copyA Come to think of it there
has never been a case where the
public a.s been taken so much into
the confidence of a committee bent
on finding out just how something
happened and bow much it happen
ed. The Hilo populace will find
itself on short commons in a news
way if this supply is to be shut off.
There is a bunch going about that
the leak will still allow the news to
Without further ado the Filipino
bunch passed out in something
slower than record time but with
quickness and dispatch never-the-
less. It is thought by the officials
that the lesson of today will be
beneficial to some of the other Fili-
pinoes who may be inclined to get
noisy. But banging has been in
the murder game for more years
than can be spoken off hand, and
yet the murders continue at irregu
lar intervals, just the same.
It is like white slavery; arrest
men and send them to jail for a
short term, if you will, but the
slavery business will go on just the
same and the chances are even that
those same men will get back into
the trade when their time expires.
There seems to be one form of pun
ishment for that' class of cattle.
England adopted the whipping post
and within twenty four hours the
channels boats bad their quota of
passengers for France, where the
idea of punishment for inacqiu n-iius
had not penetrated the skulls of the
officials and probably never will.
Adopt the post for miicqucs and
wife beaters and there would 1
fewer divorces on the ground of
cruelty, and very few cases of as
sault to bother the magistrates.
The sentimental folk protested on
on the ground that the post would
be the cause of the men losing their
manhood. What do you think of
that? Such people were without
manhood when they started into
whip women or put them into lives
Again it begins to look like Wat
son but you will note that it is
likely Governor Prear will remain in
office until September first, as the
Nkws published months ago. Also
it picked Watson for a winner. Since
his return the democratic pary
seems to have become somewhat
disorganized, and team work has
been supplanted by pretty jealousy
in the struggle for jobs. Only the
other day the mouthpiece of Link
became involved in a brawl with a
citizen at the race track, and it is
said the politics of the party being
out of joint had something to do
