When a motor truck averages
nearly fifty miles a day for eighteen
months and Iosls only the lime

as great, if not gre.iter, than that
of any other transportation agency.
A Packard three-ton truck makes
suburban deliveries near Denver
p for J. S. Btuwn and I'.rothcr Mei
f 'cantile Company. The mountain
i'; grades in that vicinity are not only
steep but the road conditions make
v going most difficult. In winter
f the snow and ice complicate the
( hauling problem.
Brown Brothers state that in
eighteen months their Packard
truck covered 21,000 miles. It
was out of commission but three
days, which were given over to a
thorough and complete inspection
10 see ii any overturning was
necessary. The repair costs for
.he year and a half were less than
SlOO. The Packard replaced seven
horses at a considerable saving in
cost.
1 his truck carries from ten to
twelve tons per day and the daily
average of from forty-five to fifty
miles includes Saturdays when the
work day is shortened by several
hours. The high altitude is
factor which makes this record of
exceptional interest.
English authorities on automo
)ile and mechanics have not only
set the stamp of approval on the
1914 Cadillac's two-speed direct
drive real axle but have taken pains
to analyze in lengthy articles its
manifold advantages, the efficiency
and comfort it secures and the
economies it affords. Mere is a
significant paragraph from The
Motor, an authoritotive London
publication:
"We have always held the Cadil
lac in the highest esteem, and ad
mired it as a criterional example of
high-grade American construction
It is obvious that no single gear
ratio can possibly be right for all
speeds and conditions, and even a
top-speed direct-drive is obviovsly
of extra advantage if it is duplicat
ed. For instance, if the engine
were turning at 1,000 revs, a min
ute, a certain speed on the low
drive would be obtained. Move the
electric switch and bring the top
direct-drive into operation, and an
. increase of 42 per cent, in speed is
at once obtained. Inversely, one
'can maintain the same speed of the
gear and reduce the engine speed
and equivalent percentage, and also
effect a saying of a considerable
portion of the said percentage in
petrol consumption. Then, again,
the friction of the various moving
parts decreases proportionately
with the speed, thus also bringing
into effect another saving."
