THE MAUI NEWS, SATURDAY, MARCH 7, 1914.
Mauian
Waxes
Wrath
"I see", said n well known Maui
man the other day, "that.a banker
from St. Paul declares that free
sugar will not hurt Hawaii. I
wonder what he would say if aomo
one suggested that free overdrafts
without interest would not hurt
his bank?"
Then waxing wrath about the
absurdity of outsiders, who know
nothing of local conditions, "shoot
ing olf their mouths" about the
sugar situation, the Mauian said,
"The banker talks about small
farmers. How in Sam Hill arc the
small farmers going to raise crops
and transport their produce 2,100
miles and then compete as to prices
with mainlanders who raise truck.
Talk sense. These islands would
not be weth a cuss if it were not for
the fact that sugar can be raised
here."
The gentleman also made a few
hot remarks about the President
and his policies but, what's the use,
ahyhow."
