Points at Which It Is the Greatest and
the Least.
What is tlip prcatest diameter of the
earth? Tlio form of tlm earth is tlint
of n flattened spheroid, prontor In di
ameter nt tho equator tlinn nt tbo
polos, but this is modified by tlio no
rldents of its surface, so tlint tlio
diameter varies according to tlio point
lit which it Is measured.
It might bo expected tlint the dinm
eter would bo greatest if moitsured
from tlio top of tlio highest mountain,
which is Mount Everest. In tlio Ilima
lnyas, but unfortunately tlio point nt
which tlio diameter would emerpo on
tlio other side of the world is in the
Pacific ocean, where this Is more than
7,000 feet deep.
Professor I'. lionise! of Schulpferda
snys tlio greatest diameter of the onrth
Ih that tali en from tlio s-umniit of
Mount Chliubornzo, in Ecuador, 20,13it
feet above tho sea level. This, ho Buys,
cmerpes at tho antipodes on n high
point on the north coast of Sumatra.
This diameter is 7,020.3 miles.
As Chliuborazo is almost on theequn
tor, its summit is that point on tho
earth's surface which is most distant
from the center. There weipht is
feeblest and centrlfupnl force prontest
The earth's smallest radius is that
from tho center to the north pole, but
It is not certain that tho line throuph
tho poles in the smallest diameter, be
cause the south polo is on n hiph pla
teau. It might be found that n line n
little distant from tho poles, which
would emerge nt sea level nt each end,
would be even shorter than tho polar
diameter. Such n line would bo found
from n point in tho Antic ocean be
tween Spitsbergen nnd Greenland to n
point just off the const of the Antarctic
continent in the big bay overlooked by
Mount Erebus, in nbout 175 to ISO de
