- OUR ISLAND CONTEMPORARIES
Statehood for Hawaii would not be
of much use should the sugar Industry
be killed by the removal of the tariff
on foreign grown sugar Imported
from countries where twenty-Are
cents a day is considered to be good
pay for laborers. As for head-overseers,
timekeepers, sugar boiler, etc.,
the lucky ones get as much as sixty
dollars a month. How many people
would there remain in Hawaii to make
up a population, under those condi
tions? Let the slogan be "Territory
and Tariff!" Hawaii Herald.
Our Crack Revenue Cutter.
It appears that Laysan Island has
been raided again by bird poachers,
and tens of thousands of birds have
been slaughtered, for the sake of a
few feathers per bird. The dead bod
ies have been found in heaps on the
Island. Why doesn't our government
retire the Internal Revenue Cutter
Thetis, which is supposed to watch for
such violations of law, and hire a de
.cent sampan? There are plenty of
' them which can outrun the Thetis
and would be far more efficient.
Hilo Tribune.
Pie For Kuhlo.
Regardless of party, Kuhlo Is
stronger now than he ever was. The
last Congressional party nearly cinch
ed his hold on the Territory as was
remarked at that time. This one
completed the Job. He has been able
to laugh at enemies here for years,
and has done bo, and will keep on as
long as they waste their time being
enemies. Hilo Tribune.
Lord Kitchener informed us sow:
months ago that the war would be. 'In
in May. He neglected to state, how
ever, that Austria would begin it.
We are all for peace, of course,
but the war which Professor Alfred
Dusck has come to Honolulu to wage
against the pink boll worm will be as
popular, as any . peace policy ever
evolved. And may It be more success
ful. Star-Bulletin
Was Good Promotion
As a promotion proposition alone,
the visit of the Congressmen to Ha
wail has been worth all that it cost
the taxpayers of the Territory. In
matters of legislation, as some of the
visitors pointed out, Hawaii has to
take her chances with the rest of the
Union. To match threatened disaster
here, one speaker pointed to disaster
in the rich state of Louisiana, caused
