OUR ISLAND CONTEMPORARIES !
A Hard Act.
The Workmen's Compensation law
Is a corker ,and the small employer
who has only a fpw employees under
him is going to foil 1 lie iipw act In a
very unpleasant manner. And thp
pmploype Is also coin? to feel the ef
fects of the act for it will work out
that the employer will not see his
way clear to give any increase in
wages that might, without the com
pensation ' act, have hcen on the
hoards.
The employer in a small way of
business is going to feel the effects
o fthe act severely, and it is going to
cost him considerable money for pro
vldin ginsurance and bona against ac
cidents to his help. The large em
ployer of labor will not feel the bill
so much, but it has always been that
way whpn it comps to legislation in
thpse islands. Hawaii Herald.

Why Not?
Why not Bend malnlanders Tor ter
ritorial judgps? Surely all the com
petent legal material in mainland De
mocracy was not exhausted when we
got Stuart, McCarn and J. Wesley
Thompson. There must bo some more
good ones floating around somewhere.
Why not tajje a look in that good old
Democratic State of Georgia? The
judicial temperament is there, if any
where. Advertiser.
Telephone Tolls.
The fact that the telephone rates
for private and party lines are to be
reduced next month is pleasing to
learn. And it is all the more pleasing
because the company was not forced
to make any such reduction. It shows
the good sense of tho Irectors, who
know that to reduce the monthly
charge for telephones will result in
many more phones beint installed.
The country toll idea is. a good onp
and will rpsult in the eliminating
of so many "Line is busy" rep'ies
from central. In the past, some peo
ple with nothing oi importance to
tny, used to hang onto a wire for b.ilt
an hour at a stretch and prevent some
body with an important perhaps life
an death message from getting con
nection with the person desired. The
toll system for the outside districts
wil! surely cout out a lot of useless
talk that always went on in the pant
under the old system. Hawaii Herald.
After all it muf-t be noted that the
man who attacked Mr. J. P. Morgan
uncovered the fact that the financier
Is even now engaged in floating a loan
of a half billion dollars for the war
ring nations of Europe, the money to
be used for the purchase of guns, am
munition and war supplies in the Unit
ed States. Let. vn be honest with our
selves : Is this business of Mr. Mor
gan "strict neutrality?" Garden is
land. '
Moving picture houses are now run
ning full blast on Sunday evenings.
Evidently the people did want Sunday
movies after all.
Many people will sign a peace peti
tion to the President of the United
States telling him what to do who
would not dream of even suggesting
to the manager, of a plantation how
he should conduct his property. Hllo
Tribune.
