Eggs Dropping Fast
Vegetables Scarce
Potatoes and Cabbage Should Be Sold
Now. Oranges Good Dut Cheap.
Hides May Go Lower.
HONOLULU. January 10. 1916.
The prices of nil prados of epgs are
falling and it is likely that they will
go still lower. 1'rodueers should be
pure to ship only strictly fresh epps,
and eggs which have not been wiped
with a wet clolh. as eggs so cleaned
spoil quickly. The pure food commis
sionei ia i:ityectinii inland eggs more
carefully than ever before, and will
condemn island eggs that are stale
just as quickly as California eggs.
He sure that your eggs are fresh when
t'hlpping.
There is a scarcity of poultry in the
miket lit 'he pre:"1!!'. I'nie. t hicken
and cluiks in goo i oivij ions meet n
ready sale at good prices. Do not send
thin or sickly chickens to the market.
he general run of green vegetables
in (he market is below Mamiard and
high in price due to the recent exces
sive rains. Island cabbage is selling
well and is in good demand. Most of
the coast cabbage is received in poor
condition. Cabbage should be shipped
in crates from other islands and not
in bags. There is good demand for is
land potatoes but very few In the
market, rroducers should send them
in while the prices are high.
Strawberries are commencing to
come into the market and are selling
well at 20 cents a pound. The sale for
pohas is not steady. Some weeks sev
eral hundred pounds can be sold while
other weeks 50 pounds cannot be sold
and have to be dumped. Island or
anges are very good this year, being
free from the Mediterranean fruit fly.
The price is low, however, due to
heavy importations of mainland or
anges which are Belling at very low
prices.
The condition of the hog market is
about the same. The Division would
be pleased to have the names of all
hog raisers in the Territory as a mat
ter of record.
Hides are bringing the same price
as last week but according to advices
from the coast there is likely to be
another drop. Shippers having any
quantity of hides would do well to
unload at the present prices rather
than take chances on prices going
lower.
The Division now has room for
large quantities of produce and it is
hoped that more consignments will
be received from now on.
A. T. LONGLEY,
Supt. Ter. Marketing Division.
