est bidder, for cash to satisfy the lien for taxes thereon, together with

VANCOUVER, August 10 Japanese do not wish to remain in
foreign lands. Retiring Japanese ambassador to England, passing
through here stated majority of Japanese who come to America come
with motive to study American methods, but do not desire to remain.
LONDON, August 10 Official reports say German submarines
torpedoed 13 British trawlers and sunk 1 British collier in North
Sea between July 31 and August 5.
WASHINGTON, August 10 United States accepts Carranza's
proposals for settlement of differences by negotiations.
ROME, August 9 Italians today entered Gorizia. Conquest of
Bride-head yesterday with assault today which carried the defenses.
Number of Austrian prisoners already 10,000, and defenders in fight
are fast falling into hands of Italians. Isonzo river crossed by Italians
in vicinity of Gorizia and Italian cavalry is pursuing the Austrians as
they fall back in disorder.
LONDON, August 9 British won further victories against the
Turks near the Suez Canal. Their supplies gave out and they killed
their camels and drank their blood. Turks killed their German officers
before surrendering.
PARIS, August 9 Germans made violent attacks today on French
positions north of Hemwood and were repulsed. Fighting continued
tor possession of the woods at Thiaumont. Here Germans gained
further footing. At Fleurv French made progress.
GERMAN HEADQARTERS ON WEST FRONT, August 9
Town of Peronne under bombardment today by French artillery. City
hall with its priceless paintings by Italian and Flemish masters, burned
and city threatened by destruction from flames.
NEW YORK, August 9 Railroad strike crisis cased. Federal
mediators will hear sides and try to make compromise. Companies
are ready for arbitration.
HONOLULU. August 9 Urged that Governor be speaker at
democratic rally. Central committee may consider this proposal. Be
lieved fusion is near. Ratification meeting Saturday night, August 19,
at Aala Park.
Filipinos flocking to court to secure citizenship papers.
HONOLULU, August 9 Despite rumor, Harry Murray refuses
to step out as committeeman. Republican leaders hold conference, but
reach no conclusion on factional issues. No decision made as to camp
aign. Arrival today of national committeeman, Bob Breckons, is awaited
anxiously.
Miss Olive and Miss Vera Day are in Honolulu after having served
as Red Cross nurses in Britain. Say England is calm and Britains are
caring for wounded.
Railroad tariff affecting Hawaii shipments lifted. Overland freight
rates to San Francisco for Islands is given large increase. Transporta
tion heads submit their revision and Inter-State Commerce Commission
may approve.
Word received here that II. L. Strange, of Honolulu, was wounded
twice while fighting in trenches. He makes light of his injuries and is
now back at front.
Ad Club committee opposes Mayor Lane's bond plan for Honolulu.
Declares in report that adequate waterworks and sewer system are first
essentials. Would ask legislature to provide for funds. Good roads are
important but under ground improvements should not be relegated.
H. J. Lorentzen, deputy collector of internal revenues, has taken
option at $1,000,000 for a Nevada rancher, on Island of Lanai. He has
left with party for inspection of the island.
LONDON, August 9 Lemberg is once again menaced by Brusil
lof. Officially reported that Austrians have ordered the evacuation of
the city which is key to all Galicia. Petrograd says that troops have cut
railroad used as supply line by Teutons.
CHICAGO, August 9 Hughes denounces Wilson in a bitter
speech. Speaks in hall where he was named in June and says that chief
trouble with administration is that it has never had a defined program.
NEW YORK, August 9 Deaths since July first are 828 babes. Of
these 685 are victims less than 5 years old.
PARIS, August 9 Trieste is threatened by victory of Italians.
Vienna admits Austrians were comielled to abandon bridge-head at
Gorzia, on the Isonzo front. Position is regarded as key to Teuton line.
French and British forge ahead in desperate fighting north of the
Somme. Gains cover front, four miles wide.
NEW YORK, August 9 American Federation of Labor is stand
ing behind brotherhood in demands. Situation is acute.
SAN FRANCISCO, August 9 Sherman Keesling is branded as
disloyal. California republican leader charged by Editor Rowell.
NEW YORK, August 9 Hughes' suffrage stand is endorsed by
Roosevelt.
PETROGRAD, August 8 South and east of the Dniester river,
on the south-east front, Russians, during past few days have driven
Teuton forces back. South of river Russian soldiers have battered so
heavily at enemy that Teutons have fallen back along whole line, a
breadth of 15 miles. Russians captured the town of Tlumach, in region
east of Dniester ridge and heights beyond where Teutons made a vain
stand. Russian cavalry pursuing the enemy south-west of Kolomea
along Stanislau railroad. Prisoners taken in battles of Sereth, 166 of
ficers, 8415 men. Russians continuing advance.
BERLIN, August 8 Russians advance against Teuton line from
Tlumach to Ottynia. Teutons have withdrawn to previously prepared
positions.
PARIS, August 8 On the west front today the French by hard
fighting advanced east of Hill 139, along the Somme. German attempt
to recapture trenches east of Monacu farm defeated. Germans today
launcher series of attacks from Fleury to north Thiaumont forces,
obtaining foothold in Thiaumont wood. Fighting continues here. At
tack at Fleury checked.
LONDON, August 8 British soldiers today advanced east of
Trones woods and north of Roclincourt. British raiders entered Ger
man lines and blew up a number of strongly prepared dug-outs.
Vienna declares Italy was worsted in light sea fight. Austrians
carried out heavy bombardment on Italian forts of Wolsetto, destroying
a number of military establishments. Italian cruiser and six destroyers
appeared on scene and sea combat ensued. Italian vessels were hard
hit and retreated, while Austrian torpedo boats were unharmed.
NEW YORK, August 8 400,000 railway employees threaten to
strike and to tie up 250,000 miles of lines. Companies declare new
scale demanded impossible.
HONOLULU, August 8 Central group of storehouses will be
built to cost $127,000. Authorized in letter from war department to
day. Fort Shafter is the site. Railway will connect. Reserve supply
of equipment for all army posts here to be stored.
Hawaii is effected by child labor bill in senate. Shipment of pro
ducts from state or territory within it provisions. Big politics played
with pair of measures. Immigration bill is linked to the other and may
put the President in a hole.

baggage is in charge of and on the saire train as the holder of the ticket.
