I have before me th journal of two parties
between Fort Randall und Fort Laramie, both
made since Lieut Warren's trip In 18,7 one
by a private party, and one by Lieut U. D
Anderson, ol Ibe army, In command of 350
men, and twenty-five wagons heavily loaded.
They both took dlffxrent routes from that taken
by Lieut Warren, and different from each
other. The former msdo the distance 358
miles, und the latter .147. Actual measure
ment might vary these estimates of distance.
The scale upou Warren's imp makes It much
less, and men ol Ihe most knowledge ol this
country bflle.ve It not over !I00 miles. Now,
Randall and Larumlu ure both out of the true
route, tho former beiug loo lar north and Ihe
latter too far south ; but, as I have not the

to that point. We have, then, the whole dis

miles, and this estimate is doubtless from 30 to
100 miles too much.
