At this season of the year Florence presents an in teresting and cheerful appearance, with its cottonwoods in full leaf, meadows, fields and gardens clothed with the verdant garb of bpring, and in the distance the snow-capped mountains, "rock-ribbed and ancient as the sun." The people of this place arc certain ly contented, aud look forward compla cently to the near future when a magnifi cent city will rise and make the south bank of the Gila famous, and the mines adjacent pour streams of mineral wealth into its streets District Court convened last Mondar. Vmet JMUcewncIi presiding. A Grand j Jury was cmpanneled, which is yet engaged in investigating the ways of evil doers There are a number of cases on the calendar, ! but the Chief Justice works expeditiously and with a view oLMrtaiung expenses, am will terminate judicial proceedings at an early day, To use a hackneyed but expressive phrase. the political cauldron is beginning to seethe in this section of the Tcrritojy. A Dotno cratic mass-meeting is caiicu, to uc iiclu in Florence next Saturday, for the purpose o organizing the party. Divided interest is manifested by certain parties. In facr, the Democrats of Yuma, Pima, and Pinal seem decidedly m earnest, and interesting devel opments may bo expected when they be come fully awake and warmed up to their work. It is always amusing to watch from a disinterested standpoint the working of the unterificd Democracy. There is a large. intelligent class in the parts of the Territory where your correspondent has recentlv visi ted who arc opposed to organizing political parties in the Territory at present, thinking any movement in that direction to be pre mature, and not likely to be productive of ocnehcial results. .vcn in Democratic ranks there arc some who look with disfa vor on political organization. Visitors are arriving by every stage, attracted by the flattering reports from the mines, which are as favorable as the most sanguine could desire. The weatiicr is charmingly delightful, the health of Flor ence generally good, crop prospects nil that could be desired, and the imaginative mind can contemplate the "Bright germs of earth, in which perchanttt wo seo What Eden was what Paradise may bo." F. L. 1$. G. Florence, A. T., March 14, 1878. VEKDiJ MILL, FAKUIXG, KTC. Editor JIixeu: All is quiet along the Verde. The farmers are busy putting in their crops, fencing, etc. Recent rains have caused the young grass togrow finely, which gives an excellent prospect for good grazing. The Jordan brothers and air. ox arc busy on the ditch and water-power for the mill, which has already arrived here, and everything seems to be moving along well in this valley of ours. I havo noticed several items in the Mixizu about the Verde flouring mill, and in each case it was spoken of as a little mill. Kon, we of this valley are naturally, and perhaps pardonably, nroud oi our lirst mill, and tlo not wish it to be underrated. We arc told by a party who professed to know, that the stones arc larger and of better quality tiian any ot those in bait Itiver Vallev. They are three feet in diameter, and the best tiiat could be bought of their size in San Fran cisco. I am told by the owners, that it is their object to make as good flour as can be made from wheat. And it would be dilh- cult to make us believe anv better wheat on be raised in the world than along the Verde. The mill will bo run by a four foot Turbine water-wheel, with a fall at head often feet, and willgivc 40-horsc power or more, it is expected to bo ready to run about tho first of July. If more capacity than one set of stones is needed, thev will be shipped. There is also another mill for grinding corn and cob together. lours, truly, .iionE. Verde River, March 7, 1878. The triumphal test of the telcphono was made las evening, when communication was had between the town of Yuma, in Arizona, and this city, a distance of 200 miles. Lieu tenant Ecade at Yuma and Seargcnt Pattern at the ofiice in San Diego carried on conver sation during tlirs day with as much facility as over the shortest distances. At half past four last evening a number of gentlemen were present in tho Signal office here, to ob serve the experiment?, and participated in the conversation with Lieutenant Keatle at Yuma. The distance between these points 200 miles is the greatest yet attained with the hand telephone, which must not be con founded with the "harmonic" telephone; the former being of such a size that it can be carried in the pocket, whereas the latter is cumbersome and not adapted to, or intended for individual use. San Diego Union. An Immigrant Crow. Messrs. ITeckman, two brothers who arrived here ob Thursday evening from tho State of Colorado, relate that they left Colorado with four horses and a wpgorij4mt havcMd the had luck to lose a portion or theifteams bv death, inclhding one horse drowned in the Little Colorado, and by trading they managed toTcach here with a small wagon and one yoke of oxen. The strangest part of their eventful trip, how ever, is, that a common black crow has fol lowed them all the way from Colorado, can ped where theycamped and generally rcmaining ing in sight, sometimes ho woald stopand fly around and chat awhile with other crows, but btfore camping time he would come ob and stop Hear the wagon, until "Wednesday atteraooa when they were passiag tnc slaughter-house of Milligan & Co., two or three miles east of tows, when, as if aware that tke journey was about over, he affiliated with other crows that were apparently doing well atKHrt the slaughter-house, and tmy bare sot seen him sisce They say that while to the casual observer all crows look alike-yet they became so familiar with this nc that they eoeld pick him out istosgs tfcettssad. The Prc3cott, Gillctt and Plircnix stage of Jfatterson, Caldwell ci Lcvally, went out about 0 a. m., Monday, ctirrving G passen gers, a large lot of mail and packages. If there is anything that Prescott needs more than another, it is thc establishment of a mail route from this place to Gillctt, and thence on to Phanix. At least one thous and people now depend entirely upon thc traveling public to do the favor of calling for letters and papers at the Prrscott post m l 4 'v. . It is to be hoped our Delegate, Mr. Stevens, will see tho necessity, and urge thc P. O. Depart ment to place service on the route immed iately. Kearney, the agitator, made a speech to about seven thousand people on the sand hill Jots on thc lOthin which ho described an interview he had held with Governor Stanford, and wouud up by saving that Stan ford, was a smarter and better man than lie had supposed, and garc it as his opinion that the Ex-Governor, who hadliimsclf been a working man, would vote flic working man's ticket. 3Iany of his hearers were quite enthusiastic in praise of Stanford at the close of the speech, but thc older rats thought they saw a cat in the meal tub, and suspected that their great leader had been tampered, with.
