Washington, Fob. 15. Tho contract for
carrying the U. 8. malls on tho routo from
San Diego, Cal., to Mcsilla, N. M., has been
awarded to Kerns, of Arkansas, for S55.000.

from Sau Diego to Los Angeles and San Ber
nardino, and J. IX Johnson get It at three
hundred and nine thousand dollars.
Tho awards of tho Arizona mail routes are
as follows : Ilardyyille to Yuma, to A. A.
Spear; Hardy villo to I'iochc, Nev., to W. C.
Clarke; Hardy villo to Preaco.t, to J. L. Dar
rah; Wickenburg to Florence, to R. Ash
croft; Phtunix to McDowell, to Smith fc
Block : Maricopa Wells to Phccnlx, to C. T.
Hay den; Prescott to San Jlom&rdino, to Van
Duzcn.
The bids for the mail contracts in Califor
nia and Arizona were remarkably low. Tho
routo from San Diego to MesllU waa awarded
for 855,000 ; tho names of tho contractors
not ascertained. The route from San Diego
to Los Angeles was awarded to .Buckley, for
812,000. There were nine bidden for this
route, Including Banning, vtho bid 12,500.
Tho routo between Prescott and San Bernar
dino, was awarded to Van Duzcn for $238,
000 (?) The Telegraph Stage Lino route
from Los Angeles to Delano, was awarded to
Cotter at $173,000.
Washington, Feb. 14 General Sherman
has. telegraphed Gen Sheridan to;mirch to
Bed Cloud agency and demand the surrender,
as accomplices In Lieut Kobinson's murder,
of every Indian who has raided south of the
North Platte.
Major J. G. Chandler has been ordered
from Missouri to assume tho duties-of Chief
Quartermaster in Arizona, relieving Captain
Rockwell, who is to rolievo Capt Hughes,, in
San Francisco.
Sacramento, Feb. 10 It is evident that
theru is a combination to defeat tht passage
of tho apportionment bill now before the
Assembly. If it is defeated, no bill can be
pawed, and the present unequal system of
representation will bo continued two years
longer.
Articles of incorporation have been filed by
tho Lord Byron Mining and Shipping Com
pany. Object of tho company, to ship gold
and silver ores from Fort Mohave ana other
points on the Colorado river to San Fran
cisco. Tho Company also proposo to work
mines and erect reduction works in Arizona.
Steamer Montana arrived at San Francisco
on the 14th, from tho mouth of the Colorado.
Territorial Dispatches.
Yuma, Feb. 14. The Sentinel .of to-day
notes the establishment of tho Castle Dome
smelting company's works at Castle Dome
landing, about thirty miles above this place,
on tho Colorado nvttr. Tho gentleman in
charge of tho construction is Mr P. Miller,
who has had much experience in mines and
ores. Tho company has been under consid
erable expense, but they will soon have in
perfect working order smelting works equal
to any on this coast. They will buy all
smelting ores, paying. cash on delivery their
full value, and thus savo to thn seller the
time and cost of transportation. It was
necessary, heretofore, to put the samo fa tho
San Francisco market. Wm. B. Hooper k
Co. are agents for tho company.
The weather for the past week, has bsen
varied. Rain, wind, pleasant weather and a
sand storm comprising the catalogue of chan
ges. Yes tor day and last night it rained
hard and constant.
The Senttnol of tho 14th, mentions the
arrival of O.K. Bateman, superintendent of
Colorado Colonization Company at this place
and says : " This appears to be a company
organized in San Francisco for tho purpose
of establishing colonics upon certain lands
lying adjacent to tho Colorado river, between
Yuma and tho mouth of that stream. There
arc now men engaged in cutting vast fields of
vrild hemp upon said land, and machinery is
on the way for manufacturing this hemp into
cordago and bagging material. It further
states that tho company intend to cultivate
rice and cotton, and that they hare already
shipped the necessary seeds ; also seed of tho
Kentucky hemp, to propagate after tho wild
crop shall havo been cut. "

Wickenburg, Feb. 17. The weather is cold
aud cloudy. Very little rain fell hero last
night, anu tho water In tho Ilassayainpa is
failing rapidly. No news from the lower
country.
It Is feared that the flume, leading through
tho canon to Smith' mill, has washed out
rgiin.
Two miners, running an arraitra on the
Humbug, yesterday cauia in for provisions,
and brought nine ounces of bullion valued at
S17 per Mince. The report very favorably
uii the minus of that section.

church In Arizona), they are raising funds In tho
Eastern States. .Now 1 think that tho most of
North Arizona people arc Protestants, and ought
to bo able to build at least one church. I con.

ularly l'reseott; 1 am not much of a Methodist,
but I am Protestant enough to contribute a little

My home may never be In Prescott, still my. best
wishes are with the old residents of Prescott and

beautiful. Last week wo had bat one rain shower,
and that only lasted four days. It reminded me
of Paget sound, only a shower there is liable to
last as many months, and sometimes more.
