St Peter and the Pull-Back.
From tbe Nex York Graphic we learn thatthe
rail-Back bas had some trouble with St. F:tcr.
and tbU is the way it Is told :
A little Fullback sought one daj
The ftes ol Paradise;
St. Peter wiped his cpectaclct
And rubbed his ancient ejes.
And throngs of female angels came
With enrions gaze the while.
Intent, as ladles always are.
To ee the latest style. 5
The Saint put on his glasses then
An observation took ;
"What! What The said; "this traverses
The laws of 'mustn't look.' "
Tied back iu front ! Piled up behind t
'Twill never do, I fear ! .
The thing is too ridiculous
You cannot enter here."
What did she do? My curious frtend,
She got behind a tree ;
And in a Jlfley she was dressed
As angels ought to be.
SU Peter kissed her then, and said :
"Pass in my little deir ;
But mind, you mustn't introduce
8ucli naughty fashions here."
The San Francisco Christian Advocate,
the orsran of the M. Jb. Church on tins coast
while advocating the free public school
tern, would restrict it to the simplest
lys
radt
inentary branches of education, and entrust
the higher studies entirely to the
guidance of tbo churches.
The ministerial interference in the public
institutions of the country is becoming an in
tolerable nuisance and the laiety of both
Catholic and Protestant churches may ere
lone have to combine their efforts to save
the schools from priestly und ministerial jug
gling.
There is quite an excitement in the "up
per circles" of ban Francisco society oicr
the suit commenced by Charity, wife of AI-
vinra Hay ward, for divorce. She claims
divison of the property which is estimated
at 10,000.000. In the answer which accom
nanies the complaint Mr. llayward admits
that he is in possession of considerable com
munity property but is unnble to state the
value of the same. He also asks that the
property be divided and the divorce granted.
