, .1 . r ITEMS FROM LITTLE CO-OKADO. Beaver Creek, A. April 23, 1S76. Editor .Icter: I bave been able to gather a few items which may be of some interest to your readers. Trio- advance of the Boston colony are now on the Little Colorado. The party consL of about 45 men. They Bay the country, from what they have seen of it, has been misrepresented to them. They bought their teams and outflt in La Junta, N. 31. Will have more to say about them soon. A small party of Mormons have been prospecting in the Moggollon Mountains for timber, water, eta, with the view of build ing a saw-mill the coming summer. The Jlomions on tue uiiuv uiauu "j engaged in putting in crops, wuaS out ditches and building houses. "Billy Free' and Mr. Drennen have loca ted the celebrated Stoneman's Lake for farming and grazing purposes. The Little Colorado is up booming, but as the snow is about all melted on the mountains it will soon be fordable. The Santa Fe and Preseott Mail and Express Co. have a bout at Sunset Crossing, by which thev are able to cross the large Eastern mail that is now coming over their line. A small band of Moqui Indians were on the Verde and Beaver Creek a few days ago. I met them three days ago on their return to the villages. It is not pleasant to meet them alone, although I do not know of their molesting any one; still it would be well to be on your guard when they arc known to be around. The farmers on Verde and Beaver Creek are buisily engaged in plowing, planting, irrigating, etc. B- Randallville, A. T., April 18, 1876. Editor Mixer:- Quito a stir i$- being made along the river by the arrival of the Boston colony, consisting of 50 men with six wagons. Part of their train was left six miles back of the Zuni Villages, they being unable to proceed on account of their mules being in such a poor condition. I andcrstand that another Company was to leave Boston on the loth inst. for Arizona. There arc several hundred Mormons set tled along the river. There are quite anura number of families amongst them, and they are going to work in earnest. Their inten tion is to have about 800 acres in cultiva tion this year. J. II. Tho EflVcllvp Itanjreof I'rojcrtllcs. Concerning the effective range of guns, there is much popular misapprehension. To the scientific gunner, the maximum ranee is of so little! moment that its extent for common infantry bullets, or for the heaviest Bea-coast projectiles, is unknown. The long est range known to us was attained by one of Sir Joseph AVhitworth's projectiles, viz., about 11,100 yards, not quite six and a half aifles. The efficiency is greatest near the Biuzzle, and diminishes as the range increases. A range may be considered effective at which" there is a reasonable probability ot doing injury. For bullets the effective range will depend on the way in which tho enemy's troops deployed. Against a skirmish-lino it cannot much exceed 500 yaids, but against massed troops it may be as great as 1,500 yards. With field projectiles an enemy may bo harrassed at 2,500 yards, or even 3,000. In the bombardment of cities tho extreme range is sometimes resorted to, on the as sumption; that a projectile falling anywhere within the line of fortification will work damage. Effective range turns upon tho higher question of probabilities of fire. Applctons' American Cyclopaedia, revised edition, article, "Gunnery." Constable's Sate. Terjutokv or Akikoma.
