The Mikado of Japan.
- Irle4erm mikado, used to designate the
. JJrnperor of Japan, is of doubtful etymolo
gy.' The word does not occur in the most
ancient Japanese books, but Is the one, out

'"has obtained the greatest currency. The
derivation of mikado usually accepted by
the-Japanese is from mt, honorable, august,
'ani'tddo, a gate, equivalent to the Turkish
title Sublime Porte. Tenno is the official
designation now used for the emperor, and

Mikado, Jimmu Tenno, who is usually rc
