1693, when the years will again gradual

cates that muoh snow will fall in iacsoa

tho death of Sheriff Mulvenoc. as a
postivo fect Other information ol aim
ed to have been brought direc froti Tie
scene of operations, related IK .Mt
of Deputy Sheriff Francis and oth.
The result of all this was that although
little reliance was placed upon specific
statements there was a goneral impres
sion mat mere uau oeen e. serious fight
in the Basin and that probably sorae
officers were killed and others wounded.
V ith tbis feeling prevailing the minds
of tbe people here, the relief felt em
scarcely bo imagined, when John Weath-
ford (oae of tbo deputies) was seea rid
ing into town last evening, briaging the
welcome information that all the ru
mors circulated were false, that there
bad been no fight and no one bad re
ceived a scratch. That Billy Malvenou
was safe on his way to Prescott and
that his, (Weathertord's) companion.
W. Francis and E. F. Odell were close
behind, both men and horses a little
wora with two week's rough work, bnt
as safe and sound as when they started.
Alter leaving ilogstaff on Sanday. the
21st of August, the deputy sheriffs from
hero met Mulrenon and his parly nt
Payson, and they proceeded together
towards the Basin, the sheiifl havieg in
his poeseeion ten warrants for tho ar
rest of the Tewkesbuiys and others of
the gang. They found the ranches of
the Tewkesburys occupied by tbe parties
they were in search of Bnd no trace of
them in the neighborhood. On gcin"
to a store a few miles from John Tewks-
bury'sanch. they met a pasty of tbe
Graham-uoys aad the man Andy Cooper,
the leaders ot the faction opposed to
tbe Tewkesbury, with whom they had a
conversation, but us they had no war
rants lor tbe arrest of these men. they
were not mole-ted. The Grahams stated
that if the sheriff end his posse did not
arrest the Tewkesbury gang, they in
tended to take the matter into their
owa hands and make war on them until
tbey were exterminated or driven away
from tbo country.
Tbey found somo trace of n party
having gone northward, probably to
ward Holbrook for provisions, and oama-
ing near the place lat mentioned, wait
ed to intercept them. In the morning
beforo sunrise, n messenger came mis
camp asking that sheriff Mulvenoa and
one companion come to a certbia point
to meet a party. I bey went, and it ts
understood, mst George Newton, the
man at whose ranch the killing of the
cowboys occurred about tbree weeks
ago. What transpired at this confer
ence between Mulvenon aud Newton
not jet known.
Oa visiting the ranch of George New
ton the ranch was fcand abandoned
and bnrat to tho grouad, the b diee of
tbe two horses killed in tho fight were
hero found lyic ia tbe front of tho
ruins and Ihe newly-made graven of the
two cowboys, John Pain nad ilftmiltoe
Blevins were seen close by. but no living
thing was found neur, except a bog nad
some chickens.
After scouring tho country carefully
tracks of the fugitives were found, sbow
ia that a considerable number of horse
men had gone towitrds tbe must impene
trable canons and ravines on the fursher
side of the Basin. That they had takes
every precaution to prevent saceosfal
pursuit, was evident, as on approaching
a ravine two horsemen bad deployed oa
either Eido ot the main body to protect
them from any attack on the flank.
Afeer considering the situation sheritl
Mulvenon came to the conelniou that
farther pursuit at that time woald b
useless aad unnecessarily endanger the
lives ot tho party, therefore he resolved
to abandon the chase and tbe posse
divided. Mulvenoa and his men return
ing to Prescott and tho Flagstuff men
making their way here.
Things are iu a fearful condition in
the Basin. Since tne two men I'ain and
Blevins were ki''ed by tbe parties firing
from their concealed position in New
ton's ranch, William Graham was shot
from an ambush while riding on tbe
Payson trail and died the next day. Old
man Blevins is also probably killed. He
has been misamg for n nontii cad no
trace con be found of bis body Flag
staff Champion.
