208 T-li E POLYNESI AN, THE POLYNESIAN. ofFiual jouksal or mi: iawailw GOVEHSMIIST. HONOLULU, SATURDAY, MAY 10, 1843. A correct report of the American Ship ping at Lahaina, this season, ha3 heen fur nished U3 through the courtesy of M. Cal kin Eaq. 't the United States Vice Commercial Agent for that port. Wc hope to get one of the other shipping shortly. There have been, up to April 30, more than 170 ships at Lahaina, of which 54 were at anchor at one time. As many as 700 seamen havo been- ashore on liberty at once, among whom good order ha9 prevailed. This result is due not only to the good disposition of the parties themselves, and to the efforts of the native authorities, but in a great measure to the excellent influence exerted by the U. S. Vice Commercial Agent, who, has shown himself both desirous and efficient in coope rating with all concerned in maintaining a proper discipline among the crews. Mr. Cal kin's practical acquaintance with the habits and humors of whalemen, eminently quali fies him for a post which requires great judg ment and discrimination in any one while sustaining the authority of masters, not to in fringe upon tho actual rights of seamen. Wo believe Mr. Calkin to havo succeeded in this, and to have gained thereby the respect and confidence of all parties. By a judi cious management of the many petty appeals so constantly made to consular agents, by their countrymen, for the thousand and one causes which operate upon the minds of seamen, much unnecessary annoyance can be saved the authorities of the country, and the Consul thereby secure their respect and esteem. By the English Schooner Sarah Ann, from Tahiti, wo havo dates from that placo to the 7th of April. By tho arrival of a Btoro-ship with 200 tons ot heavy munitions of war, direct from France, to be followed shortly by another, it would appear that tho Fronch Govornmcnt designs to render their Oceanic Establishment permanent. Queen Pomare still remained at Raiatea, off which and Huahino tho steamer Phuton was cruising. Tho Sarah Ann brings tho confirmation of the death of Capt. Forbes, and also tho supposed seiz ure of tho Will Watch, by tho French Stoamcr, for the illegal sale of muskets to the natives. April 6th, tho Frigato Brandywinc, hence 30 days, had not arrived. Tho U. S. Sloop St. Louis, Capt. M'Kccvcr.was at tho Bay of Islands, New Zealand, with the English sloop Hazard. Both vessels wero employed in protecting tho persons and property of tho settlers from the natives, who threatened hostilities. ' French Barquo Adolphc, Capt. Morvan, hence, was 44 days in reaching Tahiti. The following has been furnished us by Capt. Dyke, of ship Canton, through M. Calkin E.-uj., U. S. Vico Commercial Agent, at Lahaina. 11 On the 27th of March, the sloop "Jane," belonging to Tahiti, arrived in the harbor of Papeete, and reported the death of Mr. James Forbes, of the Schooner "Will Watch," and of two of his seamen. It anpears that Mr. Forbes, in company with Mr. Russell and three seamen, endeavored to land at Sir Charles Saunders' Island, the surf prevented them, when a nntive went off and undertook to shew them a passage; but unfortunately in this second attempt Tho boat got swamped, Mr. Forbes, Mr. Russell, and one 5f the seamen, were cast violently ashore Mr. Forbes having been struck senseless, and two of tho unlbrtunato men wero swallowed in tho surf and seen no more. Mr. Forbes, Mr. Russell, and the surviving seaman, were conveyed by a whale-boat, on board the schooner : two ineffectual attempts wero made to bleed Mr. Forbes; medicine was also administered without effect. On reaching Huahine, Mr. Forbes was carried ashore on n matress, where it appears ho gradually sunk, as tho "Jane" reports having seen tho funeral procession of tho unfortunato gentleman; but a fair wind having sprung up, she came away without any advices from tho shore, confirming the report." American brig Elizabeth, Capt. King, of Salem, with arms and amunition for tho Fiijecs, was at Tahiti last of March. Two French soldiers wero kept constantly on board, to prevent her landing arms, and the French steamer was to sco her clear of tho Islands.
