THE "GARDEN ISLAND.
OUR BUSES
MEN
Continued from pagt 1.
there's not a set of men connected
with A firm on Kauai, who transacts
more business than these faithful
count' workers do each month,
and well do they deserve all credit.
In this building:, too, the Hoard
of Supervisors holds its monthly
meeting, at which in absolute har
mony, the affairs of the county are
regulated.
Lihue's Bank:
The Manager of this most sub
stantial banking house, is Mr
Frank Crawford, who, we are also
pleased to chronicle, is our post
master.
Mr. Crawford has been a resi
dent of Lihue for a number of
years. He assisted in drawing plans
for the bank, and now has the
satisfaction of presiding over
business which has within the last
few years, increased by leaps and
bounds. Manager Crawford is
man of integrity and is without
question one of the best posted and
most conservative business men on
Kauai.
The Kauai Garage
J. A. Hogg, manager o f the
Kauai Garage, has by far the neat
est garage on Kauai. Manager
Hogg now and then does a rent
business, but is, strictly speaking,
in the sales business. He has a
complete repair shop in connection
with his garage. Mr. Hayselden,
an expert on gasoline engines and
autos has charge of the shop while
Manager Hogg takes particular
pains to personally oversee every
thing which comes from or goes to
his garage. Manager Hogg is a
firm, frank and a most estimable
business man, which gives his con
cern the reputation of being one of
the most reliable on the island. In
addition to managing the affairs of
the garage, he is Superintendent
of the Kauai Telephone Co.,
The Kauai Telephone Co:
The Kauai Telephone Co., is
the busy firm of the island, with
its net-work of wires, stretching
from Maua to Haena, like gigantic
spider webs on the dewy morning
grass. Few there are who realize
the attention required to keep these
long lines in repair. The rapiditv
with which breaks are mended and
disconnections are made, indicates
Superintendent Hogg's keen-eyed
alertness for pilikias. The lines
are all kept in splendid repair and
the service cannot be beaten.
The Lihue Central:
Right here let us pause for suffi
cient time in which to pay a pass
ing compliment to the Lihue Cent
ral, who, notwithstanding the
knocks and hasty expressions of
nervous people, is always as serene
as a mill pond never so disturbed
or impolite as to neglectan accom
modation for a subscriber. Truly
she has the patents of Job and the
forbearance of an angel. The
young man who holds the switch
borad on the night watch, is none
the less attentative to his duties
and is equally deserving of high
est praise.
Lihue's Ice and Soda Works:
"How would you like to be the
ice man?" Well, if we could only
freeze on to such a successful plant
as A. D. Hills manages, we would
like it immensly. Even to think
of a cake of ice these sweltering
days is some consolation, but what
is it compared with a whole ice
plant and a big soda water works
combined. If we were there this
minute, the whole works would
certainly suffer a considerable loss.
For years, Mr. Hills has managed
this very prosperous manufacturing
establishment, and whether from
association, or what not, he has be
come one of the most cool headed
and well known business managers
on Kauai.
The Kapaia Store:
The Kapaia Store, w i t h its
handsome new edifice, its modern
improvements and immense stock
of general merchandise, stands as
a landmark to the name of J. 15.
Fernandes. who began business
here a number of years ago in a
very small way. Courtesy, honesty
and perseverance have won for Mr.
Fernandes, a standing in the
community which could not have
been gained otherwise. He is a
small, quiet and unassuming man,
and takes much pride in the neat
ness of his store. Mr. Sousa is
his head assistant whHe each em
ployee of this large store is an ex
perienced man in his line, and
Manager Fernandes is to be con
gratulated on his ability to select
men of their character in assisting
him in the adminstration of his
constantly increasing business.
The Kauai Shinpo:
The Kauai Shinpo Sha, is
situated m Kapaia, and is the only
Japanese newspaper on Kauai. It
