In old, old times, many hun
dreds of years ago, kings were the
judges, and to them came the peo
ple who had disputes to be settled.
If a king were not wise and good,
it was a sad thing for his people,
for then they could not get justice.
In those far-off days there lived
a king called Solomon. So wise
was he, and so good, that his fame
went beyond the bounds of his own
kingdom, and he was held in honor
by people in distant lands, and
even by their rulers.
More than that, though he has
been dead for ages, the story of his
wisdom and his goodness is still
told in our own day. Not only
was he bettei than any other king
who reigned in his time, but he
was wiser than kings who have
One day there was a dispute be
tween two women as to which of
them was the mother of a certain
young child. Each claimed the
baby was her own.
i To King Solomon came the two,
that he might settle the dispute and
decide which should have the child .
Each told her story, and each made
so plain a case that none of the
people stood by could decide which
of the women was the true mother.
Neither could the King, by their
tales, for each one offset the other.
But the wise King could read the
heart of a mother, and he thought:
"I have heard their tongues speak,
now I will ask a question of their
So he gravely said: "I have as
yet not been able to decide which
should have the child. What say
you; shall I not have him cut into

two equal parts, giving each of you

One of the women answered:
"Yea, great King, if I may not
have the child, give me one-half;
for I would not that this other
woman should have him."
But the other said: "O King, I
pray thee, harm not the child! If
I may not take him to my heart, I
would rather that she should have
him than that he should be cut in
twain. Give him to her, and I
will mourn my loss, but will rejoice
that the child liveth."
