MRS. C. A. BLAI5DELL,
10 GOOD TOASTS
Here's to the maid who's had to
wait the tardy coming of a cautious
mate. May she go forth and find
her fate, before, alas! it is too late,
and snake him through the nuptial
gate ere he has had time to rumi
nate! This is the year this is the
day, don't let the fellow get away;
don't stop to monkey or to spoon,
impale him now on your harpoon.
Don't stop to don a bridal veil, but
drag him to the altar rail. Then
after you are safely wed, and find
you've sadly been misled, and after
all your pains and fuss your hus
band isn't worth a cuss, go wash
to pay for grub and rent, for then
its useless to repent.
This is the month and this the
year when party hacks again appear
and smile and smile the same old
way and seek for votes both night
and day. Then here is to the can
didate, he never yet was known to
wait and let office seek the man,
he seeks and finds it if he can. No
office yet was ever known to run
around and seek its own. This
"modest worth" is much too slow
in politics to stand a show, and it
preference one would woo he's got
to blow his own bazoo. The mod
est violet is sweet, but oft it's
trampled under feet, and seldom
gets its meed of praise because its
head it doesn't raise, but hides
down in some lowly place and
never lets its beauty grace the
showy places of the earth where
we can see and note its worth.
But see the flaunting hollyhock dis
played from yonder stately rock.
It's pompous beauty 'sflashing glare
swings proudly in the summer air,
and he that runs can see its fire and
all its gaudy grace admire. And
he who wants to win in life, amidst
the struggles and the strife will
never emulate, you bet, the lowly
modest violet. But unobtrusiveness
he'll mock and be a flaunting holly
hock. This notion may not find a
berth with those who favor "mod
est worth" but its the only win
ing creed for those who struggle to
succeed, and if inpoliticsyou stay,
you'll find it is the only way. The
men the people honor most, are
those who always loudest boast of
their own worth, and forge ahead
where angels often fear to tread.
