for public offices from a governor
down, come before the respective
voters and show themselves and
tell the people just what they stand
for on all the vital issues of the
day This is no time for evasions
or excuses and that time will never
again come back. We are ad
vancing, and the man or woman
who does not keep apace with the
trend of the times had better fall
out of the ranks or the people will
relegate them to the proper place
just as soon they get the oppor
tunity.
We are in a progressive age and
as the time rolls by, the progress
will become more rapid. This is

ing to a close. The people are
waking up, and there is no reason
why the intelligent voters of this
Territory are not competent to
conduct theft- own government.
That old and most precious
document the Declaration of In
dependence contains some of the
grandest sentences ever composed
by mortal man. For instance:
"That governments are instituted
for the welfare of the people."
"That when a government be
comes destructive to liberty, the
people have a right to alter it,
etc." This old document should
be brought out for review once in
a while. From the present
state of affairs it would seem that
a large majority of our people had
forgotten this famous old docu
ment. Many of these old princi
ples, can be applied to things here
on Kauai.
The Garden Island, believes
that every candidate on the county
tickets should go out over this
county and hold meetings and tell
the people what to expect of them.
There are certain questions which
are of vital interest to every tax-
paver of Kauai County laws of
which no change can be made un
til the voters go to the poles and
array themselves :n opposition to
any candidate w h o attempts to
practice the ' 'stav-at-home' ' policy.
The CxArden island nas no
desire at this time to be personal
in this matter, but we do think
the people should consider their
votes worth a personal solicitation
of every candidate in the field. We
do not desire to dictate to any one
We only desire to honestly call
attention to the conditions as they
exist having the fullest confidence
that a majority of the people will
finally get right on everything.
Honesty, integrity and ability
should always be the chief require
ments of any candidate for any
public office.
The Garden Island has been
furnished with a copy of the So
cialist Platform, with an accom
panying request for honest criti
cism thereon. In another column
our readers will find the platform
in full. There are clauses in the
document with which we are ,at
variance, but on the whole, it is
based upon a theory which seems
sane and practical. Unlike our
morning contemporay who takes
exception to the right to recall
"undesirable" officials, we most
heartily agree with this clause,
basing such belief upon the con
ditions which confronted Honolulu
not so many months since, when
the power to recall would have
meant so much to the reputation
of the city's administration. As to
undated resignations, this, we be
lieve, has occurred before, right
in sacred Honolulu even among
some of her blue blood. The so
cialist party is striving to aid a
class of people who deserve every
possible assistance, and there is no
more call for an attack on their
platform than any other political
faction.
A careful perusal of the plat
form will indicate that the welfare,
the happiness, the energy and
spirit of the men and women who
do the daily work in our mines
and factories, on our railroads, in
our offices and ports of trade, on
our farms and on the seas, is of
the essence of our national life.
There can be nothing wholesome
unless their life i s wholesome,
there can be no contentment unless
they are contented. The physical
welfare of this class of people
effects the whole nation. We shall
never get very tar in the settle
ment of these vital matters so long
as we regard everything done for
the working man, by law, or bv
private agreemeut, as a concession
yielded to keep him from agitation
and a disturbance of our peace.

greatly appreciate a discontinua

now under way, if it would not
cause a great inconvenience to
those behind the shovel. The

proving anything but pleasing to
those who necessarily must pass
It would require but a moment's
hesitancy upon the part of the
workmen, who up to the present
time have apparently been unaware
of any disagreeableness.

of the idiotic clauses in his pet

published for '2y cents a

at Great Bend Kansas, and edited
by one W. H. Kerr.
From a Kerrful perusal of its
contents, we find that Mr. Kerr
has made the discovery that the
universe contains no real God; that
man contains no soul, and that life
is ended forever at death, and that
Gods, Saviours, souls, saints,
devils, spirits, angels, heaven and
hell, are purely mythical.
Now, we'll admit, with Mr. Kerr
that some men have no souls, and
probably he has none. He sure
writes like a fellow that has none,
but we can't believe it of every
body.
As for angels, the world is full
of them, and they range from 16

We may not have a dog-goned
bit of sense, but it certainly seems
strange that any candidate should
fail t o appreciate a man's vote
sufficiently to ask for it. It is true
that certain candidates hold
cincn on jobs, but Mr. V oter, your
vote is just as valuable to Mr. Can
didate as though such a "cinch"
did not exist. There is a future to
which to loon forward and the
wise candidate is ue wno realizes
the value of being a little courteous
regardless ot the "cinch" he
holds.
