THE GARDEN ISLAND.
Every school teacher has his or
her method for "perfect" atten
dance, and of course naturally
think it better than others. The
Hanamaulu teachers have a plan
where in addition to an excursion
for the class with a week's, atten
dance, a promise to publish the
best descriptive composition on the
excursion, in The Garden Island
is held out as a prize. The follow

On Friday last, grades six and
seven went for a tramp. We start
ed at 12:30, each of us taking a
pencil and paper for jotting "down
notes of our trip. The teacher took
his small rifle, and loaned it to some
of the 6th. grade bovs who did a
great deal of shooting but their
aim was very bad. We tramped
through the pine forest along the
beach until we came to where a
cluster o f springs bubbled u p
through the sand near the ocean's
edge. Here we girls and the teach
er sat down while the boys went
on further hunting for live coral
and crabs. In due time the boys
returned and then a target was
pinned against a tree and all the
boys and girls took their turn in
trying to make a "bull's eye."
This over, we started for home,
some of the boys returning bv a
short cut through the cane field
while the rest of them remained
together. Reaching the school
house about four o'clock, we got
our books and went home having
had a very happy time.

Grade VI Hanamaulu school.
Friday afternoon, together with
our teacher, the children of grade
six went down to the sea beach to
look for live coral. The teacher
took his gun. We saw somo doves
but we did not shoot them. As we
came near the beach, we found
many pine trees growing. Passing
through them we came to many
big" boulders where vines grew.
We jumped from rock to rock,
looking for coral. At last we found
some, but it was dead coral and
because the tide was high we could
not see the coral we wanted.
We sat under the trees while
the boys went hunting. We drank
water from springs which came up
out of the sand so close to the
water that high tide covers it. The
teacher gave us each some shells
and let us have his gun to shoot
at a target, after which we all came
back to school at four o'clock.
