Editor The Garden Island.
Dear Sir:
Permit me t o express in the
columns of your valuable paper,
my opinion as to the good work
accomplished by the demonstra
ting teachers at the convention
held last Friday. The devices
shown in the different subjects
were most' interesting, simple, and
practical. Particularly was this in
grade one, by Mrs. Wedemeyer,
whose dramatizing of a story in
bringing out English left nothing
desired. The acting of the story
being most successfully done. The
work of Miss Daisy Sheldon, in
number work was also most com
mendable. I consider that the con
vention has done a great deal of
good, and predict far reaching re
suits. Another pleasing feature of
f'e occassion was the reunion of
the 1912 class graduates who met
for the first time since graduation.
The first impression (but a n
erroneous one, as will be pointed
out is that Tuberculosis is on the
increase, a n d alarmingly s o,
throughout the Territory. Hono
lulu shows an increase of register
ed cases of 109 that is an increase
of 60 per cent since June 30th.
1911. Oflhu shows an increase of
33 cases, or over 100 per cent.
Hawaii shows an increase of 89
cases, over 24 cases, or 50 per
cent, says Dr. Sinclair in h i s
annual report of the Anti-Tuberculosis
Bureau.
A further analysis, however,
shows that the increase in cases is
billy apparent, and not real.
In Honolulu we have at the end
of the vear 60 per cent more cases
than at the end of last year, but
this is due to the fact that a greater
proportion of cases are now regis
tered at the Bureau than formerly
It is to be expected that if cases
are sought for, and ferreted out,
the figures will show an apparent
increase, and this Bureau has de
voted a great deal of its attention
to hunting out cases. Ihe nurses,
in the employ of the Palama Settle
ment, and under the direction of
the Bureau, are constantly on the
watch for suspicious cases, and
this has had good results.
Furthermore, which has been
done to persuade private physicians
to report their cases, not necessary
for supervision purposes but to
know tlie status of the disease in
the Territory. Strangely enough,
many physicians are loathe to report
cases of tuberculosis, perhaps
through fear of their patient taking
offense, and changing their physi
cian, or on account of fallacious
opinion that by reporting cases of
tuberculosis' they are guilty of a
breach of professional confidence.
Several circulars have been sent
out by the Bureau, urging physi
cians to report their Cases. One to
the effect that if the notification
is marked "Confidential," this
Bureau will not interfere in any
way with the supervision of the
case, the doctor hereby assuming
