The new tariff puts paper and
sugar on the free list. This surely
ought to allow us to print a sweet
paper.
Ye Editor got insulted last week
Some one sent him a card adver
tising a benutifier for the com
plexion.
President Wilson has appoint
ed an editor ambassador to En
gland. We fellers are always ready
to respond to our country's call
when it needs us or we need the
job.
Uncle Sam is going to recog
nize the new republic of China.
Perhaps he might recognize the
republic of Mexico, but Mexico
has been shooting itself up so
much lately, that it is unrecognizable.
The postmaster general has
issued orders that all postmasters
must work at least eight hours a
day; But this doesn't scare Ye
Editor off the Hanamaulu post
office trail for he works almost
twelve hours a day on his present
job.
"Does Morgan and Standard
Oil control newspapers?" is the
headline in a contemporary. Don't
know whether thev "does" or not,
but it is a cinch somebody should
control our contemporary's gram
mar. They don't control The
Garden Island, but we are not
prepared to say positively, with
out due consideration cf the
matter, that they might control it
i f the proper influences were
brought to bear on us. Still the
inducements would have to reach
about six figurcS. We are no cheap

hold the next semi-annual conven
tion at Kapaa again,
Mr. J. M. Kaueakua, Program
Committeeman and general direc
tor, proved a live wire, and to him
is due much credit for the success
ful way in which the convention
was conducted.
M r . Opio, former supervisor
from Kapaa, was head epicurean.
He was not only a liberal con
tributor to the provision store, but
was himself in general charge of
the dining hall.
Mr. and Mrs. P. N. Kahokuo-
luna of Maui were guests of the
Kauai Association during its
session.
Editor's Note:
Our reporter has not at
tempted to write everything in detail.
In his write-up on the Big Sun
day School Exhibition, he has
mentioned only those classes whose
work had special features. In
justice to all the classes, however,
he wants it said, that every Sun
day School class did extremely
well.

is greater than the supply and it
is only natural that the underpaid
teacher will soon leave the pro-

tive position. The man who makes'
a good teacher would have made a
good lawyer, a good doctor, or a
good man at anything else he may
have undertaken to do. In many
places in the country the teacher
is hired for one year and at the
close of that year some one else
will be chosen in his place while
he may take his pack and his sack
and seek another school elsewhere.
This kind of treatment mav be
well and good for tramps but it
will never develop a rare of effi
cient teachers.
